THE LATE FATHER MAHONEY
PRIEST AND SPORTSMAN Widespread regret was felt in Wanganui at the news from AVellington, published yesterday morning, of th n death of the Rev. Father G, Mahoney. All classes and all creeds have happy recollections of the ardent desire he invariably displayed to accomplish good for the community in which he •■'Cd. He was a. man of high ideals, or friendly and bright disposition II" oved sport in all its forms, but in no branch of recreation was he more at home than in Rugby, New Zealand’s national game. He was a film forward m his younger days and played for St. Patrick’s College. When he came to AVanganui his ability in an administrative capacity was at the disposal of the I nion and he rendered great service to the game on the management committee. He had been president of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union and occupied that position when the ’Bay rose to prominence as Ranfurly Shield holders. He has filled the position of vicepresident in this centre.
Father Mahoney came to Wanganui from Hastings at the beginning of 1921. taking the position of Parish Priest. Three years ago, in consequence of broken health, he left for Wellington. His place was taken by the late Father Gilbert, whose death occurred last week. Father Gilbert remained in Wanganui for ton months before the parish was taken by Father Hoarc who is in charge at present. Father Mahoney’s funeral is to leave St. Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street, Wellington, at 9 a.m. to-morrow. Requiem Mass is to be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Wanganui, early next week.
