TENNIS

By

"HALF VOLLEY.")

At last a fine week-end! The Wan-g-nui tennis season, retarded by the wet and boisterous weather, gained a sudden impetus last Saturday, when blue skies and warm sunshine attracted a large percentage of members to the various courts. It was the Wanganui club’s Saturday’s piny of the season and members thoroughly enjoyed a period of uninterrupted play. The club’s handicap events have been drawn up and the first round is being decided. The courts are in perfect order and will be just as fine an asset to the club as in past years. Wanganui East Club.

With the advent of the first fine Saturday this season there was a good attendance at the Wanganui East courts, over 130 players being present. The Wanganui East Club are playing a match with Westmere on Saturday at the Westmere courts. Okoia is sending a team to play Wanganui East on the same day on the Wanganui East Club’s courts.

The primary schools’ tennis tournament. which was postponed last mouth on account of the wet weather, is set down to be played next Saturday morning. Entries for the various club championship events will be received up to ►Saturday, December 6. Mr E. Colo has again donated trophies for both the ladies’ and men’s junior singles championships. The committee will grade the entries for the championship singles into the senior and junior divi-

A number of handicap matches were played during the week-end and aJI those members who have not played their first round matches arc asked to do so as soon as possible.

Following are further notes on players:— Miss Hoar has the strokes and the ability to play well, but her game seems to suffer from lack of concentration.

Miss McGuire is a keen, steady young player. She is inclined to get out of position and she lobs too much instead of practising her driving. A good length lob is a very useful shot but it is more effective when it is unexpected. Miss Craig puts cut on nearly all her shots and when she is on form her drives arc hard to pick up; but she does not give herself enough net clearance and consequently her game is not very reliable.

Miss Greaves, while not having any very outstanding strokes, plays a goud all-round game and has ait excellent match temperament. Her successes last season included the' junior championship of the club and the handicap singles at the St. John’s Easter tournament, and partnered by Miss Moye she won the club handicap doubles. She plays a number of shots with her weight on the wrong foot, but a few minutes shadow tennis every day would correct this. Miss Latham is a comparative beginner, but she is developing along the right lines and her orthodox stylo helps her to beat more experienced players. She might find that it would be an advantage to alter her service so that less physical effort would be required. New Year Tournament.

Players can leave Christchurch on December 31 and arrive at Wanganui on January 1, at 1 p.m. by service car from Wellington. Entries, accompanied by entrance fees, must reach the secretary (Mr A. W.
