THE PLUNKET SOCIETY

BRANCHES IN CONFERENCE USE OF NAME IN ADVERTISING. REPAYMENT FOR SERVICES. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. Reporting on the deliberations of the special committee set up to inquire into the use of the name of the Plunket Society as an advertising medium, Mr J. A. Young, at the annual conference of the Plunket Societies to-day, said that the addition of three words to a remit from the General Council would make the position clearer. The remit, as amended, would read .is follows: “That branches be asked to do everything in their power to maintain the broad policy of the society by endeavouring’ to prevent the use of its name by trading firms directly, or indirectly, for commercial purposes, or as an advertising medium.” Mr Young ‘-aid that tne objection was net to adver. by the societies which were assisting to raise funds. The society did object, however, to trading firms advertising with the name of the society for the benefit of themselves. More Support From Mothers. It has been the absolute principle of the society that the services of nurses should be free and that the people should not be urged to join, or contribute, said Sir Truby King to day, when speaking at the annual conference of the Plunket Society. He was referring to a remit from the Geraldine Branch that parents receiving the help of Plunket nurses should become members of the society except in necessitous cases.

“Year by year,” he continued, “there has been a suggestion, gradually accumulating in force, that we should induce more mothers to appreciate the fact that they are receiving very great benefit, and that, at least, they should join the society. Mrs Barke the mover of the resolution has seated that, out of 132 mothers visited by nurses, only 12 w°re mcmbcjs. Only 12 women had contributed 5s for the enormous benefits they rece/vecl. I think it is a very excellent suggestion from Geraldine.”
