EDUCATION SYSTEM
AN OTAGO COMMENT [Per Press Association.! DUNEDIN, Nov. 20. A statement by the Otago High Schools’ Board on the Recess Education Committee’s report expresses the opinion that before any considerable changes arc made in the system a commission of qualified persons, including the Director of Education, be sent abroad to obtain and report on educational methods and developments in other countries- The statement suggests that a committee of non experts with little first-hand knowledge of other countries’ systems, cannot <rivc the best advice. Lengthy criticism is made of tho “general depreciatory tono in which tho committee discusses the work and influence of the secondary schools* “ The Board, being compelled to conclude that the committee derived from, witnesses quite an erroneous conception of the spirit, aims, and methods of secondary education the Board describe! the proposal for the creation of a unifield inspectorate for all schools as one that could not be entertained by any body of persons conversant the facts. There arc many other criticisims and generally the Board holds that aU the anomalies and difficulties, including co-ordination of the work of varioui typos of schools, enn bo effected without interfering with the present control methods.
