FIRE AT PETROL STATION
EXCITEMENT AT HAWERA. ATTENDANTS SAVE SITUATION. [Per Preus Association.] HAWERA, Nov. 19. The prompt action of two attendants averted a possible serious situation in the interior of Newton King’s motor service station at 11 o’clock this morning. A motor van was drawing its petrol simply from a Bowser, when an
explosion of tho van battery. <>catod near the rear tank, ignited the van tank and cab, and tin Bowser an 1 hose were immediately enveloped in flames. Burning spray shot across the garage, settling on the van owner, Mr T. Sheehan. Two spectators threw their coats round Air Sheehan and smothered tho flames, while a garage attendant, P. Brown, stopped the tongue of fire which was issuing from tho van tank by holding a felt hat over the aperture. Fire leaping from the Bowser hose and spreading in the vicinity of the pump was checked with a chemical extinguisher used by another attendant. W. Brown.
The van owner received medical attention for severe burns on the face ami nock.
