lhe weather did its best to dampen the spirits ot the competitors for tuey carried their boats down to the puntoe n in a downpour, but such is the
enthusiasm of oursimiL that they worried little about lhe stale ol the weather. As they paddled upstream to lhe starting post, however, the clouds cleared, allowing the race to be rowed under a wintry sun. A fairly stiff breeze blew and a strong current was running. Wanganui won the toss and Clay chose lhe inside course. 51 r 11. \\. Cooper started the race and Collegiate beat Wanganui to the first stroke, ricking up smurtL, however, Wanganui placed themselves half a length in front of their opponents at the Dublin .’Street bridge and gradually increased their lead to three lengths. School did not at any stage look iiKe wining. They rowed a slower stroke than the club, who also slackened their rate of striking when the groyne was passed. Both crews steered too far to the middle of the river and thus did not make full use of the current. A large “gallery” followed lhe race, which attracted wide interest, in view of the approaching race between Collegiate and Christ's College on the Aromoho course on Thursday morning. The following were the crews for Saturday's race:—
Wanganui—Clay (str.), Powell (3), sFotfett (2), Grover (bow). Collegiate School—Lee (str.), White (3), Bell (2), Coleman (bow). The offcials of the race were:— Starter, 51 r 11. W. Cooper; umpire, Mr I*. Evans; judge. Mr T. Atchison.
