RACING AT TE RAPA TO-DAY

WAIKATO SPRING MEETING BRIEF REVIEW OF FIELDS (By “Kestrel’’) Though the the weather may be found favourable for the spring meeting, today and Monday, of the Waikato Racing Club, it appears certain that the going at Te Rapa will be very heavy, for reports from Hammon are to the effect that heavy rain fell on Wednesday and also on Thursday morning. Fields for the fixture are on the large side, though if the conditions are bad

it is likely that starters will be fewer.

The Trial Takes, with which racing starts, presents a problem, but there may be support for Guid Day, Te Homai and Day Guide. The hurdlers will be found contesting the Waimai Hurdles and even with I|added poundage, Glenn Bay looks to have a good chance. Glensrar and Pcndavies also appear well placed. There is not much to go on in the! Tamahere Stakes in which lllumenelli, 1 Limeen and Roseric should go as well' as anything else. Fourteen have been left in the Waikato Cup. which should result in a good contest. Standfast must be respected as the winner of the King Edward Memorial Handicap at his last start, and he will be well suited by the roomy course. True Blood may be benefited by his recent outings. He won this event last year. Eager Rose and Royal Doulton are both decent handicap performers, and though neither of them has d< / • much this season they should be fairly i well forward. Mervette and Gold Money have yet to win beyond a mile, I but the first-named has been going well enough to warrant support. Now that Gold Money has more Bgo sh- may stay on better than when formerly tried beyond a mile, so that a good effort may be looked for. The others cannot be strongly recommended, as they are not a good lot. Valsier is a recent winner and Black Maire wag second to Gay Cockade at Cambridge- These two should account, for the division on the minimum, although Prince of Orange would be a possibility if iie could repeat his autumn form. Towe ver, he raced badly at Whangarei and on ‘4\'t j running his chance cannot be regarded verv hopefully. When investors have to make a final choice they may choose | proved performers over the distance) like Standfast, True Blood and Eager; Rose. The class is not strong in 1 I Taupiri Hack Handicap and Star: Comet. Kaha and Archieval should all go well. An array of speedy sprinters will contest the Cambridge Handicap and it will be a difficult race to win. Pegaway and Paganelli are class performers and, although they are njaking liberal concessions in weight to the others, they will only require ro be produced fit to take considerable beating. I’\ i way has not had a race lateiy, but lie has been sprinting well, and it may bn worth remembering that he usually races well fresh. On recent form, Lucy Rose and Prince Vai look like being the chief danger for tl*‘ top-weights, although horses like Leitrim, Royal Ruler, Sir Kay and Tenakoe may also show up I prominently. Popular selections may be Pegaway. Prince Vai and Paganelli. The concluding event Is the Hautapu Handicap, in which Volimond, Principal and Perennis may appeal.

Karapoti was timed to run the last four of five furlongs in 52sec- He was stopping a little at the finish after going very fast in the carry stages. Aspian was always going better than T.imeen while running four furlongs in 53scc. Aspian’s preparation has been hindered by a severe cold, but progress should be made from now on. Sea Cob wont leisurely over five furlongs in 1.15. Perennis hit out freely over half a mile in 54sec. Hoihoma was allowed I> run along a couple of furlongs flow u the back under a strong purl. Very little fast work was attempted and several horses wk? were to have been given their final gallcos were let off with comparativeIv light tasks. The course proper, vftn the trestles out to the extreme outside, was open and the going was soft. If the wet weather continued it was expected that the track would bo heavy. Miss Albvn, who had the better of the start, was go ; ng nicely alongside Black Maire at thfc end of five furlongs run in 1.11 1-5. With an advantage of well over a stone in the weights. Star Lsp finished just ahead of An Tahi in running three furlongs in 39 3-ssee. The first ranted although rather green as yet, hit boldly and shows promise. Glena Bay and Holly Holm finished on terms after encompassing five furlongs in 1.12 2-5. Mervette went away from the sevenfurlong post to a moving start and accompanied over the last four furlongs

bv Stonehenge, came home strongly in 1-37.

Musquin was of no use to Rita’s Light over four furlongs in 55sec.

Hakanoa and Unoco started off together for a five-furlong trial, but the rider of the first-named lost an iron after they had gone two furlongs which occupied 28$see and L'noeo, without being pushed, completed the full distance on his own in 1.15.

Day Guide galloped four furlongs in 55 3-ssec.

Cruachan and Trig no?n Handled the going well in executing serviceable tasks followed by a sprint up the straight. Paganelli finished up a strong working gallop, with a sharp ■print, ix> the straight. Unless the tracic dries up he will not start on Saturday. Ruby Dawn and Lupin Abbey worked strongly together over a distnee but were not timed. The first-named bears a very bright appearance. «

Mosque and King Win worked in pleasing style but were not after time. Arch Eagle and Pendavles went four furlongs together but were not asked to go really fast. Botn, however, hit out nicelv.

Additional riding engagements are as follows!

A. Tinker: Pegaway. Mosqno and Kaha* H- Goldfinch: Morretts. A. Bentley: King Win, Turongo and Pcrsham. J. McLaughlan: Toujov. I.

The track not being suitable, Sir Kay and Trishna are unlikely starters at Te Rapa.
