TAIHAPE TENNIS CLUB Much enthusiasm was shown at the annual meeting of the Taihape Tennis Club on Friday evening when the president, Mr P. E- Wakeman, presided over a large attendance. The annual report read as follows: “The past season was somewhat marred by the lateness of the official opening and by tho state of No. 1 court. However, the laying down of a further concrete court was a distinct asset and some really good tennis was obtained, especially in regard to competitions. There was a further decrease in membership attributable mainly to the state of No. 1 court, but now the club will be able to define a clear policy in regard to the latter, it is hoped that the membership will show a greater increase for the coming season* Concerning No. 1 court the committee reports that finality has now been reach ed with the Taihape Borough CouncilThe Council has agreed to accept £7O. in full settlement of its claim in respect to this court and the committee will be able to have tne court put in order as soon as sufficient funds are available.

During the season inter-club matches were played with Kaephi and Kailway. These matches were very enjoyable and it is hoped that more can be arranged during the coming «season. Tennis in Taihape would benefit considerably if more inter-club matches took place. The ladder competition was revived

McKenzie, J. PMortland, club captain, Mr J. Bradley. On the motion of Mr J. Coutts it was decided to officially open the season on Saturday, October b. A match between teams selected by the president and vice-president will be played on the opening day. It was decided that any player who

has been a member of an affiliated club should be exempt .from paying an entrance fee- The chairman explained that there had been some ill feeling over this matter last year and players who had previously paid an entrance fee upon joining the Taihape Club. Mrs Dymock inquired if there was a rule regarding the number of times local residents could play on the courts before becoming members. The chairman replied that there was no rule covering the matter in existence at present and the meeting decided to make a limit of seven days in this connection. The chairman reported that the committee had accepted the offer of Messrs Cardston and Baxter, of Levin, to stage a reveille in aid of the club and he hoped that all members would lend a helping hand in this connection. The producers would be arriving in Taihape on September 20.

Mr Duncan suggested that the general appearance of the courts should be made more attractive, and added that the establishing of a few plots by the pavilion would be a step in the right direction. Mr Wakeman concurred and promised to donate two seats. It was hoped to arrange a “working bee” to carry out necessary improvements to the courts at an early date. The secretary Mr J. H. McKenzie and the outgoing officers were thanked for their services. The president, Mr Wakeman, was also accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his splendid work in the interests of the club.
