RANGITIKEI DEFEATED

LOSERS’ SPIRITED SECOND SPELL Saturday was a Rugby gala day in Marton. It was the chosen occasion for the official opening of the new grand stand recently erected on Marton ParkIn addition, three games, two of which were of a representative nature, were contested. These were Wanganui v. Rangitikei and the Wanganui Referees v. Rangitikei Referees. Wanganui won both games by narrow margins although it must be said luck was with them in the bigger fixture. Had Rangitikei possessed a reasonably good goal kicker or if they had infused half the energy into their play in the earlier part of the game that they exhibited throughout the second spell victory would have been theirs. To be down 21 points to 6 at half-time ana then finish with scores at 29—26 is indeed. a good performance. The following were the teams. RANGITIKEI Hartley Downs Atkins Lourie Barton Walden T. Hartley R. Lourie (capt.) Potaka Major Walker Gronn Mclntyre 0 Parkes Ward Stewart Tremewan Bryes Agnew Piarama Dunean (capt.) Darby $ Morgan (Ist.) Gibbons (2nd.) Simpson, Potaka Lowe Hogg WANGANUI Rangitikei set play in motion, the ball going out on the full. From a scrum at half-way Rangitikei secured and Barton cut through nicely but lacked support Walden kicked hard for the line and, from a line-out the greens took charge. Atkins was conspicuous with a good run before being •well grassed by Potaka. Rangitikei appeared to score but were recalled. Wanganui secured from the scrum but were penalised a nd another scrum was ordered and Morgan found the line. Barton made a splendid run before sending out to Atkins, to Downs for the green winger to race away to score the first try of the match and also drew first blood for the home team. Walden failed to raise the flags—Rangitikei 3; Wanganui 0. Spurred on by the reverse, the Wanganui forwards carried play well into Rangitikei territory. The greens were penalised and Morgan landed a fine goal, making the scores, after twelve minutes play, Wanganui 3; Rangitikei 3. With dramatic suddenness Wanganui added to their score- Byres charged down a kick by a Rangitikei player. Ward raced up, secured possession, and carried on to score in a handy position, ktorgan again raised the flags. .Wanganui 8; Rangitikei 3At this stage of the glue Wall'll and Barton changed places the fori.Vr coming out to second five eighths and the latter going into first. Potaka (Rangitikei) missed a penalty. Then Mclntyre broke away and the crowd were on their toes with excitement. He threw several would-be tacklers off, but tried to do too much, however, and Gibbons brought him to earth, ball and all, very heavily. The old axiom, “the bigger they are, the harder they fall’’ was true in this case. It was a splendid tackle by Gibbons and it richly deserved the applause that it aroused. Darby was the next to score. Morgan speculated and the ball went across the field to Darby who picked up quickly and headed for the line with all the speed at his command. He went over to score beneath the posts. Morgan missed with the kick—Wanganui .11; Rangitikei 3.

Greens Spirited Play Play had not been in progress three minutes when Mclntyre secured the ball and absolutely barged his way over in brilliant fashion. Many attempts were made to bring him to earth but they w'ere of no avail and his was a splendid try. Atkins converted —Wanganui 21; Rangitikei 11. Atkins attempted to increase Rangitikei’s score from a penalty but the kick lacked direction. Walden, however, secured tho return and went over to score. Wanganui were next to score- From a scrum on the green twenty-five Duncan sent the backs away, the ball going finally to Lowe, for the Wanganui winger to go over. Gibbons kicked a pretty goal—Wanganui 26; Rangitikei 14. R. Lourie and Hamer scored tries for R'angitikei in quick succession, but neither were converted making the scores with but a few minutes to gu: Wanganui 26; Rangitikei 20.
