GOULBURN TO SYDNEY BIG N.S.W. ROAD RACE. OPPERMAN’S FASTEST TIME. Received Sept. 14, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 14. I The Goulburn-Sydney 130 miles cycle ■ race and was run in fine weather with a strong following wind, as a result of which the time records were smashed in both union (or amateur) and league (or professional) sections. One hundred and eleven amateurs faced the starter, also 95 professionals, including the throe Victorian cracks, Opperman, Lamb and Nicholson, who were expected to provide a sterling race from scratch. Nicholson had a puncture twenty miles from the start and Lamb a little later. Opperman then pushed through and overtook the ten yard mon, Ross and Thomas, with whom he sprinted to the finish. The professional result was as follows: G. Hird (Hurlestone Park) 70miu. handicap, 6hr. 21min. 30sec. 1; L. Petrie (Concord) 50min., 6hr, 2min. 30soc. l-ssec. 2; V. Routlcy (Charlingford) 45min., 6 hr. 2min. 3; H. Williamson (Paddington) 45min. 6hr. 2min. l-sscc. . Hird beat Petrie in the final sprint by a wheel. Opperman made fastest time—shr. 46min. lOsec.—breaking the record by 34min. lOsoc. The amateur icsult was.—F. Burley (Dulwich) 51min. 30scc. handicap, 6hr. 21min. 513 ssec. 1; A. Huntley (Lakomba), 51min. 30sec. 6hr. 21min. 51 4-ssec. 2; D. Freeman (Newcastle) 53min., 6hr. 23min. 22ser. 3; W. Greenwood (Bankstown) 53min., 6hr. 21min. 52 l-ssec. 4. The four placed men were associated practically the whole journey and shared the special sprinting prizes along the road. The road was good, but several competitors suffered punctures. One or two fell badly. Burley won with a good finishing sprint by a wheel. The fastest time was put up by Edgar Johns (Newcastle) shr. 46min. 10 l-ssec., or lOmin. 30sec. better than the record.
