PATEA DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB The annual meeting of the Patea Rifle Club was held last Thursday, Mr P. Palmer presiding over a fair attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet were submitted. The balance sheet showed an excellent state of nuances, with a credit balance of £26 odd. The annual report submitted by the committee read as follows: “We have to congratulate the club on the state of the finances, the balance sheet disclosing a balance of £26 18s 6d (as compared with £2B 19s 9d last year), which is very satisfactory and we think the club acted wisely in reducing the price of ammunition as it did last year. The balance of assets over liabilities is £lOl 17s 5d which is a creditable balanceEight competitions have been decided this year and these were keenly contested with very good musters and we are pleased to state that the tropnies were well distributed amongst the competitors. The club championship this year has been the closest finish since the club was formed only seven points covering the first five men. Rflt. ©• Roots was the winner with a total of 718. being one point ahead of Dep. President C. Carey, 717- Then came Pres. Palmer and Rflm. M- Carey each with 713 and Rflm. J. Huston next with 711. The club has been unfortunate in losing three of its active members, particularly Secretary G. W. King, who will be sadly missed. Rflm. A. Baldwin and Rflm. L. Bean both have left the tewn also- The Patea Rifle Association held their meeting on June 3, on the club’s range, several members of the club competing successfully. The club wishes to acknowledge tho many favours received and the outside help it has had-”

The chairman, in moving tho adoption of the report, stated it was a great loss when old members left as there seemed to be no young ones joining up. Nevertheless, the club was on a sound footing. Mr P. S- Finlayson, in seconding the adoption, stated it was gladdening to see the finances in such a healthy state. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Election of Officers The election of officers was proceeded with resulting as follows: Patron, Mr A. T. Christensen; vice-patron, Mr F. Ramsbottom; president, Mr P. Palmer; deputy-presidents, Messrs W. White and D. Roots; secretary, Mr C. H. Carey; general committee, Rflm. M. Coad, E. Thompson, R. Willis and J. O. Cunningham and officers ex officio- This was decided by ballot. Shooting committee, Rflm. C. and M. Carey and D. Roots. The annuaUsubscription was again fixed at 10s. It was moved that the handicapping be on the automatic standard. An amendment that the handicapping be straight out, was carried by 8 to 5. The handicappers for the year were elected, these being Dep.-President Roots and Rifleman Cunningham. It was decided that the ammunition be sold at 6d a packet as last year. The, opening day was fixed for Sep tember 27. Mr P. S. Finlayson spoke with regret of the loss the club felt by the resignment of the secretary, G. W. King, on his leaving the district. He had done a groat deal for the club. It was decided to place on record the club’s appreciation of his work and assistance in forwarding the interests of the club. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the president, deputy presidents and other officers, for their excellent work during the past year. The auditor, Mr J. H. Craim, was ac- i corded a hearty vote of 1 hanks. He had been auditor for about twelvo years and had always taken a keen interest in the club. The Press were accorded a hear?'’ vote of thanks, and also all donors of trophies, the Domain Board, for the use of the grounds; tho Harbour Board, for the use of property: the Patea Rifle Association, and the Fire Brigade for the use of their room for meetings. » The cup donated by the late Rifleman T. Willis, who was killed in action, which he had given to the club for the member with the hardest luck, has been destroyed, and a very suitable and handsome little cup on a stand has been presented in its place. It was decided to purchase and attach a shiefd in commemoration of the late Rifleman T. Willis. The Mayor, prior to presenting the trophies, congratulated the club on its fine array of cups and trophies. He also congratulated the riflemen who had shown their ability equal to any in the Dominion, Especially, also, he, wished to congratulate one member, who was one of the finest shops in th© Dominion. The presentation of trophies was then proceeded with, being as follows: G. W. Knig’s trophy: Rifleman J. Sampson. H. Palmer’s trophy: Dep.-Pres. C. Carey 1; Rifleman E. C. Gilbertson 2. P. S. Finlayson’s trophy: Rifleman M. Carey 1; Rifleman E. Thompson 2. J. D. Winchester’s trophy: Rifleman J. Huston 1; E. C. Gilbert 2. J. Huston’s trophy: Rifleman M. Carey 1; Rifleman H. Mercer 2. D. Root’s trophy: Rifleman H. Mercer 1; Rifleman N. Coad 2. A vote of thanks was accorded His Worship for attending the meeting and for presenting the prizes. The meeting was then brought to a close, with the handing round of supper.
