LAZY MAN’S METHODS FOUR MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. The story of a young girl who had given small sums of money to assist a man who had been dismissed from his employment because of laziness and who eventually stole a gold wristlet watch and gave it to him to pawn, was told in the Police Court to-day. The man, Joseph Mallis, alias Hicks, a labourer aged 21 years, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. The girl, whose name was suppressed, was admitted to probation for two years. Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that Mallis was of the larrikin type and had created disturbances at dances.,.- He had not been working for some time. A girl with whom he was acquainted had given him various sums of money from time to time and eventually she stole a watch and gave it to him to pawn with permission to keep the money.
Sub-Inspector Ward, chief detective, said that the accused girl was 19 years of age. Both she and her parents were of good character. She was employed as a typiste in July last. She was a member of a hockey team at Karori Park and while there she stole the watch from the clothes of another girl in the dressing shed.
