KILLING OF SHEEP
INSANITARY CONDITIONS CHARGE AGAINST FARMER Charged with killing three sheep for J human consumption in an unregistered slaughterhouse, and also with killing three sheep in an insanitary place, John Hardy, a Waitotara fanner, appeared before Messrs H. Middleton and H. W. James, J.’sP., at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Waverley on Thursday. On the first charge he win convicted and ordered to pay ten shillings costs, and on the second he was fined £3 and costs. The proceedings were instigated by he Government stock inspector. Mr H. Cleland, who said in evidence that he had found the sheep hanging in a shed opposite the Waitotara Post Office. The shed was in a filthy condition. There were seven cows walking about the shed beneath the carcases. The floor was covered with cow manure. In defence, Hardy said that he wae a farmer and under the Farmers’ Exemption clause he could kill five sheep and one body of beef a week for selling purposes. He denied that the place was insanitary when he killed the sheep the previous evening, but admitted that the place was dirtv when the inspector called.
