RAETIHI

fencing tenders. The Raetlhi Borough Council called fur tenders for fencing the waterproof house reserve on the Middle Road. In view of the searcity of worx in the district the Council did a wise thing in deciding to have the work done by contract. About 56 chains of fencing were required between Messrs Freeman Jackson and the Borough property. The chairman of the Works Committee of the Council, Mr W. Harris, said he had some experience pf fencing and estimated the work to be worth at least 27s a chain. No fewer than 15 tenders were received and considered by the Council on Thursday. The top price was 33s 6d per chain, making a total of £94 for the work. The next two were £1 12s 6d each or £9l. The remainder were as follows: £1 10s, £1 9s 6d, £1 6s, £1 4s. £1 3s (two), £1 2s IOJd, £1 Is 9ld, 18s, 17s 9d, 17s 6d and 16s 6d per chain. Councillors unanimously decided to depart from their usual custom of giving the work to the lowest tenderer. They did not consider the man who had quoted 16s 6d could do the job and make wages at that price. It was unanimously resolved to accept the tender of W. Millard at £1 4s a chain.

The chairman of the Works Committee, Cr. W. Harris, was appointed the inspector of the work. Comment was made on the close tendering and the uncommon exactness of two competitors including a 4d in the price. The attention of the Works Committee was drawn to the excessive use of water in the Borough, over 2,101,000 gallons for the month. It was agreed to purchase meters to the extent of £5l for the purpose of metering consumers on the Ohakune Road. It was agreed that in future installations of water heaters Hie consumers be required to provide their own time switches. It was pointed out that the cost or the meters for Ohakune Koail and Horopito would be saved in about three months. WAIMABINO COUNTY ROADS. Several slips have occurred recently on the Owairuu Road, Huikumu Riding, Waimaripo County, and the roadway has been completely blocked. County workmen have been engaged clearing a track through but the main work will have to be left until the fine weather sets in. The Pipiriki Road between the Raetihi Borough boundary and the Wai', puna Hill has been top-dressed with grit and is now in a good condition. Persons using the Raetihi-Ohakune Road have noticed heaps of material delivered at various places in readiness for the bitumen work which the County Council intends to carry out as soon as possible. Detailed proposals have been I prepared and will be submitted to the Highways Board for approval and every endeavour will be made to make a start with the work early next season. County workmen have lately given attention to some of the roads in the Karioi riding. Nearly all the rough sections of the Waiouru Road between Perham Larsen’s crossing and Karioi have been top-dressed with grit. Some sections of the Wangaehu Valley Road and the Karioi Station Road have also been top-dressed.
