Thu two-year-old classic contest resulted as follows— Gimcrack Stakes. (A sweepstakes of £lO each, with £lOOO added, for two-year-olds; colts 8.7, fillies 8.4, with penalties; closed with 127 entries; six furlongs straight) FOUR COURSE (Lord Ellesmere), b.f. by Tetratema —Dinner, 8.4 1 LAAIPETO (Major AlcCahuont), br.f. by Tetratema —Hespia, 8.4 2 PISA (Lord Derby), br f. by Blandford —Piazetta, 8.4 .... 3 Thirteen started. Won by a short head, with a neck between second and third Many high-class horses figure among the winners of the Gimcrack Stakes. One of these was Black Watch (1927), who was bred by the New Zealand sportsman, Air J. B. Reid. A couple of years ago the Aga Khan supplied both the whiner and the runner-up. He had nominated eight twoyear-olds for yesterday’s race, but if auy started they were not in the money. Last year the Gimcrack Stakes was worth £1460 and yesterday’s stake was in the vicinity of £l6OO, so that after all the stake is not a big one. Nevertheless the Gimcrack is a race that all the big men of the English turf like to win. Following the race the annual Gimcrack dinner eventuates at which the owner of the winner is called upon for the speech of tho evening.

Lord Ellesmere, the owner of Four Course, is one of the pillars of the turf in the Old Country, and in the past he has owned several good horses. Perhaps in Four Course he has an exceptional filly Tho owner of tho second filly, Lampcto. is Alajor D. McCalmont, who raced the “rocking horse,” The Tetrarch. The Tetrarch is tho sire of Tetratema (who got both Fair Course and Lampeto) and also of the West mere sire Chief Ruler, who was at the top of the New Zealand sires last season. Alajor McCalmont has owned several outstanding performers outside of The Tetrarch. One of his latest was Mr Jinks, winner of the One Thousand Guineas last EBOR HANDICAP DEAD-HEAT. LONDON, Aug .27. At the York meeting to-day the leading race resulted:— Ebor Handicap. GENTLEMEN’S RELISH (J. Arkwright) b m, 4yrs., by He— Bonne Bouche * COASTER (Sir Hugh Hirst) b h, 4yrs., by Planet —Dust * BROWN JACK (Sir H. Wernher) br g, 6yrs., by Jackdaw—Querquidella 3 ♦Dead-heat for first.

The Ebor Handicap is run over a mile aud three-quarters and is one of the great races of the year for Yorkshiremen. Last year it was won by Bonny Boy IL, owned by the French sportsman, M. E. de St. Alary, and was worth £llB5. One of this year’s deadheaters, Gentlemen’s Relish, will have an interest for New Zealanders, as she is a daughter of He, wffio is the sire of Cape Horn now at the stud in New Zealand.
