VICTORY FOR TAIHAPE

DEFEAT OF RANGITIKEI [ Per Press Association.] TAIHAPE, Aug. 16. Taihape defeated Rangitikei by 26 points to 21 in a Rugby match played at Taihape to-day in the presence of a large number of spectators. The game was keenly contested and intensely exciting, with the issue always in doubt. Play in the first spell was very even, and when the alf-time whistle blew each team had scored 13 points. Taihape were superior during the greater part of the second spell, and at one stage were leading by 26 to 13. Rangitikei, however, were undismayed and had the better of the dying stages, during which they added eight points. For the most part play was fast and open and the tackling on both sides was deadly. Taihape secured the ball from the majority of the scrums, and generally made the most of the advantage thus gained. The teams wefte:

Following a scrum five yards from the Taihape line A. Cameron scored near the corner. Atkins failed with the kick.—Rangitikei 8, Taihape 5. Downs put in a great n before passing to R. Cameron, who was tackled from behind by W. Thompson. However, J. Potaka, snapped up the ball and raced over. Atkins converted. —Rangitikei 13, Taihape 5. Collier scored for Taihape, but failed to convert. —Rangitikei 13, Taihape 8. Following a line-out in the visitors’ twenty-five Gr ffiam passed to W. Thompson, who scored. Collier converted.—Taihape 13, Rangitikei 13. Half-time sounded soon afterwards. Upon resuming Graham got over, but was called back for a knock on.

Play was in Rangitikei twenty-five when W. Thompson centred. Beiliss fielded the ball smartly and passed to Smith, who raced over. Collier found the uprights. —Taihape 18, Rangitikei 13. Goer secured and passed to Fuller, to Graham, to W. Thompson, who got over but lost possession. Smith, however, was handy and fell on the ball. Collier converted. —Taihape 23, Rangitikei 13. Fuller and Graham were associated in a passing movement which ended in Fuller scoring a brilliant try behind the posts. Collier’s kick was charged down. —Taihape 26, Rangitikei 13. The visitors were not dismayed, and a beautiful passing rush ended in B. Lourie scoring.—Taihape 26, R. -gitikei 16. A wild pass by Smith cnbaled Atkins to gain possession, put in a good run and then pass infield to A. Cameron, who scored. Atkins converted.—Taihape 26, Rangitikei 21. Time was called a few minutes later. Mr A. T. More was the referee.
