MATRICULATION

THE ACCREDITING SYSTEM. A COMMITTEE SET UP. [ Per Press Association ] WELLINGTON, May 16. Matriculation came in for further discussion at to-day’s Schools’ Association meeting, when the question of a general certificate for all professions was discussed. A dual scheme was favoured by Mr A. Bell, Assistant-Director of Education, who pointed out that at present they had three certificates. What was wanted was to get rid o x the incubus of matriculation and to design a curriculum that would dethrone matriculation. He was afraid, however, that tht public would not accept a certificate which rested solely upon accrediting. They must have a certificate which would gain the confidence of the public. His own opinion was that the certificates should be issued partly upon accrediting and partly upon examina tion.

The modification suggested as follows was agreed to: ‘That candidates for the school certificate sit either for the university entrance examination or for an examination of the requisite standard in papers set by the Education Departmeit, this examination to be taken in the school. It i 9 further recommended that in the later examination a system' of accrediting be gradually introduced. Further, it is proposed that a committee of the Secondary Schools’ Association be set up to collaborate with the Department in examining the whole question of school certificates, tne committee, when set up, not to confine itself to anv scheme. ”

It was decided that the schools of Wellington and suburbs should act as the committee to collaborate with the Department.
