EPIC OF AIR AND SEA
AN ACCIDENT OFF HAWAII NAVAL ’PLANES IN ROUGH SEAS (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Mav 16, 8.30 p.m. HONOLULU, May 16. A dramatic epic of the air and sea was recounted to-day when an inter-is-land steamer arrived with survivors of a sensational aerial accident during military naval air manoeuvres that resulted in the drowning of a non-com-missioned officer and the loss of four aeroplanes. Forty-six machines participated in exercises while flying between Oabuamaui and Hawaii. An air corps sergeant and three other members of the crew attempted to leave a disabled bomber 4000 feet in the air but the shrouds of tfio former's parachute became entangled in the ’planes rigging, taking him with it to the bottom of the sea. A convoy of ’planes settled on the huge seas that were running in efforts to save the survivors and later rescue vessels picked up the occupants and some of the convoy machines which, after rescuing the bomber s crew, drifted helplessly for many hours. .
