NOTED SPORTSMAN’S DEATH

THE LATE MR F. McPARLAND.

[ Per Press Association ] ? WELLINGTON, May 15. The death occurred in Wellington today, of Mr Frank McFarland, a prominent sportsman and formerly lessee of the Tramway Hotel. He was 60 years of age and was born at Charleston, on the West Coast. The late Mr McFarland was with friends on Wednesday afternoon when he suffered a seizure and was removed to the Lister Private Hospital. He was widely-known as a very generous man and enthusiastic supporter of sports. About forty years ago he came to Wellington with his parents and for some years he assisted his father in a bakery business in Taranaki Street. Later, he" joined his father in the hotel business and, in 1910, he acquired the Tramway Hotel. His collection of mementos and curios was an object of much interest. He retired a year ago and transferred the hotel to his son, Mr Arthur McFarland, 1 but remained a member of the exeeuL cutive of the Wellington Licensed ■ Victuallers Association. The late Mr McFarland was particularly interested in boxing and in the turf, and he was, : for many years, a familiar figure behind : a smart trotter in the Wellington streets. ■ He leaves a widow and a second son, ' Mr Charles McFarland, who is farming 1 at Dannevirke. Mrs J. Beach, of Pahia- ' tua is a daughter. Mr J. McFarland, licensee of the Hotel Cecil, u a brother ’ and there are three sisters: Mesdames ‘ W. Pender, J. Dwyer and C. Aldridge.
