HEREFORD CATTLE SALE

BUSHY PARK STUD YEARLING BULL 250 GNS. PRICES SATISFY THE OWNER One of the most .important Hereford cattle sales in the Dominion was held yesterday at “Bushy Park,” Kai Iwi, when Air G. F. Moore disposed of nearly 100 stud beasts and over 100 run Hcrefords. The Bushy Park Stud herd was founded in the year 1906 by thi purchase from Air James Stuckey, senior, of the whole of his Te Rangitumau herd of Hereford cattle, including the sires, Colonist (imp.), and Ensign (imp.). Since that time every effort has been made to maintain and even improve upon the high standard attained by Air Stuckey.

At the opening of the sale, Air Moore explained that he had no intention of stud Hereford breeding, as he was retaining representatives of the important families of the stud. Tho highest price paid for one animal was 250 guineas, for a yearling bull, Kapua, sired by San Gabriel with Park Regal 13, as dam. The animal was described as having a great barrel and a dark-curly coat. It was also stated that he was a solid, early maturing bull with a great constitution- Bidding opened at 30 guineas. Several ton guinea bids followed, the figure reaching 200 guineas in spirited stylo. Air George AL Currie, Koatanui, Kai Iwi, was applauded when he secured the animal for 250 guineas, Air J. Brice, of Fern Flats, Alarton, being bis last competitor. A noted sire, San Carlos, calved in July, 1924 was bought, by Air Henry Collier, Wanganui for 67A guineas. The bidding started at 20 guineas, jumped to 30, to 40 and then advanced bi stages of five. Another well known Imll, San Gabriel, calved in September, 1925, brought 60 guineas, the buyer being Air H. A. Wright, Ractihi. The starting price was 20 guineas, which rose to 30, and then increased by five guinea

Buyers were present from the north and south of New Zealand, while several firms wore bidding on behalf of clients. The cattle, it is believed, will all remain in New Zealand. The reporter was told that two Australian Hereford breeders were present but they were not operating under their own names. A feature of the sale was the representation from the whole of New Zealand. Judging by the top bids in many cases, visitors rrom other districts were seeking good Hereford blood and were prepared ta make the last bid for it. Within the next few weeks “Bushy Park” Hcrefords will be found in many new districts, including Te Anau, Waimahaka (Invercargill), Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Rangitikci, the Upper Wanganui River, Te Kuiti, Pemberton (ISilverhopc), Waikato, Wairoa and Gisborne. Discussing the sale with the “Chronicle” reporter Air Aloore said, that, considering the prices ruling for dairy produce and wool, he was quite satisfied with the prices his stock had realised. There were several farmers operating who had a long experience of Hcrefords- Notable among these, he stated, were Alcssrs Ewan Jefferson (Wairoa) and W. B. White (Takapau). The reporter was told by another man that the older Hereford followers were not buying with as much vigour an many new enthusiasts. The’ older female cattle were offered at the beginning of the sale, younger stock being offered in succession of ago. Bidding was slow at the start and did not- brighten up to any pitch until the two-year-old heifers came before buyers. Prices for this line showed more stability than for preceding lines and there was a continued demand. The following gives the range of prices paid during the day. In many cases the actual figure was duplicated in its class. The price is then quoted only once.
