THE TURF

AVONDALE OPENS EAGLET AND IN THE SHADE STABLE FIRST AND SECOND lady quex beats paganelli. (Special to “Chrrrlcle”) AUCKLAND, April 26. Ihe weather was fine but cold for the opening to-day of the autumn fixture of the Avondale Jockey Club and Lie attendance was good, the course being hard and fast. The totalisator handled £42,099. against £44,007 last year, a decrease of £l9OB. Avoneourt dropped her jockey, E. Ludlow, crossing the top in the Cheva her Hack and the rider was sent to hospital with injuries t 0 the back and Bead which were not considered serious. Favourite Wins the first. Sir Mond gave H. Gray a good start m the Rosebank Handicap, which he won well. He ran up to Operatic and Biddy Comet at the home turn and at the distance Hannibal joined in, Sir Mond beating Operatic by half a length, with Hannibal a neck away. Royal Finance came from a long way back to be right up, fourth, and then e-ame Stonehenge, Biddy Comet, Good Idea, Land Measure, New Boy. Lady Pay and Sweet Whisper. Airtight’s Hurdles.

The first fence in the Avondale Hurdles proved too much for Opa, the good favourite. Quincoma, Archeen, Airtight and Grand Arch set a hot □ace, being well clear at the six from i bunch comprising Harbour View, Mountain Guide, Dark Prince and Fhursby. At the fence near the five Grand Arch lost his position, Airtight being four lengths clear of Mountain Guide, with the others out of it. But for a faulty jump at the last Mountain Guide would have won, and he was only beaten by half a length by Airtight, with Dark Prince and Harbour View twenty lengths back. Thursby, Negress and Grand Arch fell at the penultimate fence, the same obstacle that brought down the other trio. The winner paid a fine price. Stablemates Pay Dividends. The Foley Memorial Handicap was a fine race with J. T. Jamieson furnishing both dividend-payers in Eaglet and In the Shade. Best backed were Bright Glow (£1117), Eager Rose (£870), In the Shade (£805), Eaglet (£797), White Fang (£656), and Corinax (£588). A good start saw Eaglet and Eager Rose lead round the bend out of the straight and they were clear along the back from Corinax, Kawainga, Lucy Rose, Maori Boy, In the Shade, Royal Doulton, Nassock, Hipg and White Fang, with Bright Glow last. Approaching the home turn Eaglet, Eager Rose and Corinax were on terms, with Lucy Rose, Royal Doulton (wide out), Kawainga, White Fang and Maori Boy following. Eaglet held the advantage again at the distance, with In the Shade coming through on the rails, and the stablemates had an interesting set-to, Eaglet beating her companion by a neck. Corinax and Eager Rose were in line, only a length away, and then followed Nassock, Royal Doulton, Maori Boy, Bright Glow and Lucy Rose, the last pair being Kawainga and White Fang.

Easy for Houlton. Honiton, favourite in the Oakley Handicap, won very easily and is undoubtedly a smart filly. She was behind Mauriaena, Gay Cockade, Spring Abbey, Currajong and Neil at the home turn, with a gap back to I’m Alone and Thurnus. The favourite soon collared the leaders and won comfortably by a length from I’m Alone, with Spring Abbey, who stopped badly, two lengths away. Neil was fourth and Thurnus, Grand Tea, Carl, Idem, Currajong, Brampton and Gay Cockade were next. Lady Quex Finishes Fast. Paganelli (£1653) and Lady Quex (£1463) monopolised the betting in the All-Aged Stakes, with a drop to Green Linnet (£768). Wild Time jumped out smartly at the rise of the barrier from Paganelli, King Ford, Hard Words, Lady Quex and Green Linnet. Coming round the bend into the straight Wild Time led Hard Words, Paganelli and Lady Quex, with King Ford and Greeu Linnet well back. Paganelli was in front less than a furlong from home, but then Lady Quex came at him and beat him by half a length. Wild Time was two lengths away and another couple of lengths back were Hard Words and Green Linnet. The pace was torrid from the start, the first three furlongs being carved out in 35 2-5 and the last half-mile in 49 2-5. Chromadyne a Good Hack. Chromadyne won the Chevalier Hack in convincing fashion. He began brilliantly but Ruling Chief soon ran past him and was a couple of lengths in front at the home turn, his nearest attendants being Chromadyne, Norval Tea, Treasury, Awamutu, Cruachan and Carl Idem. In the run home Chromadyne drew to the front quickly and went on to win comfortably by three parts of a length from British King, who finished strongly. Carl Idem wa ® a length away and Cruachan was fourth. Next were Treasury (who did not begin with his usual brilliancy), Haviland, Big Bertha, Lucky Alice and Tenakoe. Awarere’s Good Price. Awarere at a good price won the Railway Handicap easily. He drew out but was m Aont before a furlong had been covered. Value (who with Richfield was slow to begin) had run up to Awarere at the home turn, the pair being followed by Volimond, Takutama, Prince Vai. Royal Parade. Richfield, Mervette and Gold Money, with Branson tailod off. Awarere was not the least bit bothered in the run home and won by two lengths from Royal Parade, who finished strongly. Richfield finished fast into third place, a clear length back, and only half a length in advance of Takutama. Then followed Mervett, Value, Branson, Prince Vai, Volimond and Gold Money. Standfast Too Good.

rangi Handicap. Sir Russell and King Emerald led into the straight ahead of Page Boy, Le Choucas and Standfast. The last-named came with a good run to win by a length and ahalf from King Emerald, who was a neck in front of Le Choucas. Fourth was Mosque, with Sir Russell and Page Boy next. DETAILS OF RESULTS. STREHON DISAPPOINTS

GALLOP AT NEWMARKET. LONDON, April 25. At Newmarket Strephon did a mile and a quarter spin with Leonidas 11., and Coligny 11. He did not go at top speed, and the gallop was disappointing. He appeared to labour his action, so his scratching for the Kempton Park Jubilee Stakes caused little surprise, for Darling could not have him anything like his best by May 17. The weather is improving to-day, and is hot and sunny, so progress in trailing should be better.
