FARMERS IN CONFERENCE
The conference has certainly given both the visitors and our own farmers something to think about. It was, however, ail too short to permit of any extended change of views between the visitors and the Farmers’ Union representatives, or the proper discussion of any of the problems which confront our twentieth century farmers. The most gratifying feature of the gathering, from the New Zealand point of view, was that the visitors, following their tour of the Dominion, were able to gather from the speeches delivered by I the Governor-General, wno has evidently acquired a large fund of information on the subject of farming in New Zealand, and from the Acting-Prime Minister and others, the nature of the problems the New Zealand farmer has to deal with, and the friendly relationships the conference established. We take it, however, that matters will not be allowed to rest where they are. The New Zealand Farmers’ Union, having ! accepted the responsibility of convening I the conference, must sec to it that its decisions are carried out. so far as they are concerned, by disseminating to the various farming organisations throughout the Empire the conference decisions, with the suggestion that steps snould be taken for obtaining information Mr Matheson’s resolution calls for, the material of which might advantageously be discussed in advance of the 1932 conference by the several bodies concerned. —Manawatu Evening Standard.
