SOUTH TARANAKI

PATEA • AMATEUR ATHLETICS The final events of the season were held last Wednesday evening by the Patea Amateur Athletic Association. Two races were run off, both being well competed for, there being eight starters in each. Keen interest was taken in how Fraser and Paterson were running, as Paterson was only in the lead by four points on the season’s runs from G. Fraser. Wednesday’s runs, however, gave Fraser five points, and Paterson six, this bringing Paterson’s lead down to one point. His win on the whole season’s runs were well earned, and showed keen interest on Paterson’s part. He has also conducted himself very creditably at both outside and local sports meet-

ings. The results of Wednesday’s runs are as follows:

75 Yards Handicap. —J. Petersen (5 yds) 1, G. Fraser (5 yds) 2, D. Paterson ( 4 'ds) 3. Also started: Adams (2 yds), Cousins (5 yds), Fitzwater (10 yds), Rogers (10 qds), Williams (10 yds).

880 Yards Handicap.—G. Fraser (2 yds) 1, Rogers (90 yds) 2, Paterson (28 yds) 3. Also started: Petersen (60 yds), Adams (60 yds), Cousins (40 yds), Williams (90 yds) and Fitzwater (90 yds). The total points over the season are as follows: —D. Paterson 36, G. Fraser 311, G. Thompson 26, R. Adams 19, E. Cousins 74, A. D. Currie 5, J. Petersen 3, P. O’Grady 2, D. Grant 2. ALTON GUN CLUB CLAY' BIRD SHOOTING The opening shoot of the Alton Gun Club was held last Wednesday afternoon, when many members and visitors from Patea and Hawera took advantage of the fine weather to enjoy an afternoon’s shooting. Three competitions were held, and keenly contested. The first for the I Goodson trophy resulted in a tie between G. Armstrong (Alton) and F. O’Brien (Hawera) with 11 birds each in a 12 bird shoot. G s Armstrong won in the shoot off. The six bird sweep was won by G. Armstrong also, with G. Kettles second. The nine bird sweep was won by G. Thomas with nine birds. A very welcome afternoon tea w*as dispensed by the ladies, the whole afternoon proving most enjoyable.
