COLLEGE HOSTEL

A UNIQUE FOUNDATION STONE KEEPING IT SAFELY 4 Reference to the erection of Wanganui’s new Technical College hostel and assembly hall was made yesterday at the college breaking up celebration. The chairman of the Board of Governors (Air W. Al. Luxford) said that the attendances at the college were going up each year and he hoped the Hon. W. A. Veitch would have something definite to tell them as to what was going to happen in the near future so far as the new building was concerned. There were now over 600 on the roll and it was time the city had a new college.

“So far as the assembly hall is con cerned we know how many years we have been waiting for that and the disaster to the old building may be a blessing in disguise,’’ said Air Luxford. “ We should have an assembly hall worthy of the college and the district and a fitting memorial to those who fell in the war.” The college principal (Air I E. Newton) said that when school work was resumed on February 4 next year the pupils would once more be together at the old building which was being remodelled in one storey and fitted with additional classrooms. He hoped Air Veitch would see to it that the accommodation was up to the same standard as before September 17 last.

“It will be remembered that the foundation stone of the new boys’ hostel was laid in November of last year by the then Prime Alinistcr, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates,” said Air Newton, “and it was taken away for safe keeping.*» (Laughter). “The only thing 1 can tell you is that the plans for the new hostel are nearly completed,” said the Hon. W. A. Veitch, “and as soon as they arc finished the work will be gone on with. The additional money for an improved building has been voted by Cabinet. As for the foundation stone, if it has been lost we will guarantee to find another (Renewed laughter). The provision of a foundation stone will not be the chief worrv of the contractors.”
