“THE LORD LOVETH A CHEERFUL GIVER,” SAYS “HUT’S PADRE."

Wanganui, December 3, 1929. Dear Wendy,—l must first of all thank you for the surprise you had in store for me on Saturday morning when I looked at the paper to see that I had been awarded three marks; that was indeed very nice of you. I would also like to thank Mr. Printerman for making the necessary corrections which he does, as I am a very busy man and very often my letters are written in. a hurry. ... Your comment on my last letter has prompted me to join with you and . others in making an appeal to our Wendyites to assist us in our endeavour to bring a little of the Christmas cheer to the less fortunate ones. ... , , Wa should, dear readers, deem it a pleasure to have the privilege of giving, therefore take the opportunity while it presents itself as we never knows when our turn may come to be the needy one, and life is short. The noiseless foot of Time steals swiftly by, and ’ere we dream of manhood, age is nigh. I heard some one say once, “There are three kinds of givers—the flint, the sponge, and the honeycomb.” To get anything out of a flint you must hammer it, and then you get only chips and sparks. To get water out of a sponge you must squeeze it, and the more you squeeze it the more you will get. But the honeycomb first overflows with its own sweetness. Some people are stingey and hard; they give nothing away if they can help it; others are good-natured, they yield under pressure and the more they are pressed the more they will give, a few delight in giving without being asked at all, and of these the Bible says “THE LORD LOVETH A CHEERFUL GIVER.” Let us then, dear Wendyites. make up our minds once again to keep up our past reputation, and send forward our "Ship” laden with the necessaries for the Christmas season, remembering what Christ has said, “And the King shall answer and say unto them, verily I say unto you, in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”—“HUT’S PADRE.”
