“THE MYSTERIOUS DR FU MANCHU” Sax Rohmer’s stories of Dr Fu Alan, chu have been best sellers for years, ami now the Paramount Company has utilised the facilities of the screen to make this character live in one of his most exciting adventures. The film, “The Mysterious Dr Fu Manchu/’ which wiil be the big attraction at the Regent Theatre from to-day, takes the crafty Oriental avenger through a series of gripping events. It is an alltalking production. The Sax Rohmer stories first became popularised through the American national magazines and when thev were published in book form they made a sensation which carried Rohmer's name round the world. The sen. ies includes “The Mysterious Dr Fu Mancha.’* published some years ago; “The Hand of Dr Fu Alanchu,” and ‘•The Yellow Scorpion.” Warner Oland. recently seen in “The Studio Murder Mystery,” Jean Arthur,whose recent appearance was in “The Canary Murder Case/’ and Neil Hamilton, who also played in “The Studio Murder Mystery.” are featured, while such prominent players as O. P. Heggie, William Au.-tin ami Tully Marshall are included in the cast. The theme deals with the adventures of Dr Fu Manchu, a kindly scientist, who, while saving the life of Lia Eltham, infant daughter of a missionary, has nis wife and child inadvertently killed bv Allied troops defending Peking from the Boxer rebels. The shock changes the inoffensive scientist into a diabolical maniac, who swears to kill an Allied officer for every bloodstain on the sacred tapestry dragon. His evil activities and the manner in which his schemes are thwarted form the basis of an appealing plot. The picture contains a strong element of romance. Excellent supporting items will also be shown on the new programme.
