TELEGRAPH OFFICERS BETTING CONVERSATIONS. [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 5. Conversations on the telephone used by the operating staff of the Auckland’ Telegraph Office during the Takapuua Jockey Club’s meetings on Saturday and Alonday have resulted in the interrogation of over 4G members of tho telegraph staff by two inspectors of the Department, who wore summoned from Wellington. lhe Hne was tapped by laying a wire under the carpet, and the officers of the Department took a note of al] the conversations bus ring on betting or tips These who used the telephone were coLfrouted with notes of these conversations. In some cases the employees sought legal advice. It is th c rule of the Department that any officer refusing to supply information to his superior may be suspended. Betting conversations on telegraph ’phones by officers on duty are strictly forbidden.
