AUSTRALIAN VISITORS APPEARANCE AT AUCKLAND. BRIDSON’S GREAT HALF-MILE. (Special to "Chronicle”) AUCKLAND, Dec. 5. At the Tepid Baths to-night, before a large crowd, Gordon Bridson put up a sensational performance, when he covered the 80U yards in llmin. 23 3-5 sec., which is held to constitute a new record fur the distance, the previous best being 11.25 3-5. Bridson, who took the lead from the word “Go,” increased his advantage over Noel Ryan, the only other starter, and finally won by three-quart-ers of a length of tht bath without being troubled. He is in great form just now and, in fact, has never been iu better trim for the national championships, which will be held at Greymouth next month.

Interviewed after the race, Bridson said that Ryan had made him extend himself, but Ryan insisted that Bridson was the better man and h c would have found it impossible to beat him. In the 50 yards invitation scratch race Farrell won easily from Griffiths, with A. Rapier third, the time being 26secs. An inquiry was held at the conclusion of the tp c in connection with Farrell’s crossing of Griffiths, but the committee decided that the crossing had no actual bearing on the ultimate result. Other starters in the race were Enwright and Porteous. Th e Australian pair W’ill leave Auckland to-morrow for Whangarci, and afterwards will continue their four weeks’ tour of New Zealand . THREE CLUB FUNCTIONS LAST NIGHT’S RESULTS. GOOD RACING PROVIDED. The Wanganui East, Gonville and Gonville Ladies’ Swimming Clubs conducted very successful club nights last evening. The former club’s racing took place in the Wanganui East bath and the other events were decided in the Gonville bath. The three functions were very well patronised and some good racing was provided. A particular!y good race was witnessed in the fina’ of the Senior Cup for tho Gonville Club. The result of th c race placed three swimmers equal for the trophy nd a swim off over 62 2/3 yards was necessary. At Wanganui East, H. TO-MORROW’S CARNIVAL PROSPECTS FOR SUCCESS The form displayed by thc competitors last evening, together with their eagerness to compete, augurs well for the success of the Gonville Amateur Swimming Club’s postponed carnival, which is to take place (weather permitting) in the Gonville bath to-mor-row evening. Most of the swimmers who were seen in action last evening will be contestants at the function. At the conclusion of the carnival a dance has been arranged to take place in the Globo Theatre and the members of the Gonville Ladies’ Swimming Club are busily engaged making preparations in order to assure the success of the function.

N.Z. CHAMPION DIVER OTAGO’S PROPOSAL [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, Dec. 5. At a meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association a motion was carried that the Council be written to and urged to make an endeavour far Roy Calder (New Zealand champion diver) to visit Australia this season to compete against the Australian diving champions. It was also decided to suggest to the Council that Miss Kathleen Millar be invited to accompany the Australian Lady swimmers on the New Zealand tour.
