EGMONT RACING CLUB

THE SUMMER MEETING • HANDICAPS FOR FIRST DAY 1 Per Press Association ] WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. OHAWE HURDLES (Of 180 sovs; 1% miles)

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “K9estrel.” The Taumarunui Racing Club will hold their annual race meeting to-day and to-morrow, and the Ashburtor County Club summer fixture is also set down for to-morrow. At Woodville Next. The next race meeting in which Wanganui followers of the game will take a direct interest is the Woodville fixture, which will be held on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Indications were not wanting at Feilding that there will be a good response from owners and trainers when the acceptances close to-night. Auckland Acceptances. An final reminder is given owners and trainers that acceptances for all first day handicap events at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer fixture, together with payments for the weight-for-age events, are due at 5 p.m. to-day. The Egmont Meeting. The handicaps for the opening day of the Egmout Racing Club’s summer meeting, to be held on December 18 and .19, will be perused with interest. The fact that horses of the calibre of Star Stranger, Rabbi, Seatown, The Hawk, Merry Mint, Bright Glow and Concentrate are engaged in the Egmont Cup lends added interest to the fixture, while some of the best sprinters in the Dominion may be seen out for the Flying Handicap. In addition, the Nolan Gold Cup will attract some high-class hacks

Manawatu Meeting. To-night at 9 o ’clock nominations for all events to be decided at the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, to be held on December 26, 27 and 28, close with the secretary, Palmerston North. At the same time forfeits are due for the Twenty-fourth Palmerston North Stakes. Gold Cups. The jubilee fixture of the Feilding Jockey Club may be considered one of the most successful meetings held by that club, and it must be admitted that it was a great feat to get togeher such a fine field as was seen contesting the Gold Cup. In spite of the withdrawal of four of the candidates, eighteen went to the post and Mr C. F. Johnston; the donor of the trophy, must have felt highly gratified at the splendid response from supporters of the club. In this connection, it should be remembered that a gold cup valued at £lOO will form part of the £lOOO stake for the next Wanganui Cup. Therefore the committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club should use every endeavour to get owners interested even at this early hour. It would be a splendid thing for

the club if they could attract such performers as Star Stranger, Bright Glow, Rabbi, Seatown, Vertigern, Merry Damon, Piuthair, Speanniss, Ruanui, Merry Mint Shrewd, Prodice, Corinax, Paquito, Pcgaway, In the Shade, Oratrix and Count Cavour to Wanganui, to say nothing of the mighty Nightmarch. The Raider.

What a hard horse The Raider is to beat on his home course the son of Warplane and Hupana proved on Monday at Feilding when he got the verdict in the Colyton Handicap, though it was only by the narrow margin of a head that he beat Kaihoro. His first win was at the Marton spring meeting of the .1927-28 season, and his other successes that season consisted of two at Feilding, being the Nikau Hack at the summer meeting and the Rewa Hack Handicap at the Easter meeting. Then The Raider won the Colyton Handicap last season and followed it up by winning the Mangaone Handicap at Easter and running second in the Denbigh Handicap. The dual success - of The Raider at the recent meeting brings his record up to five wins and a second in six starts on the Feilding course

Soon Got Square. The purchaser of two New Zealand horses during the recent New South Wales campaign soon got square on his outlay. According to a Sydney writer the sum paid for Aussie and Papatu when Mr G. Paul sold the two geldings in Sydney recently was 2500 guineas, viz., 2000 guineas for Aussie and 500 guineas for Papatu. Mr A J. Matthews. who is the new owner of Aussie and Papatu is credited with having a good win when Papatu scored a victory in the Homebush Handicap at Warwick Farm on November 23.

A Cheap Youngster. Tremctus, winner of the Cambria Handicap at Takapuna last Saturday, is an Australian-bred gelding by Treclarc from Lady Afildred. He w’as bought cheaply for 80 guineas by the Ellerlie trainer, J. Williamson, on account of Mr E. P. Andreas, of Sydney, who furnished a winner on two occasions last season in Auckland with Gemlight, another son of Treclare. From Australia.

Hampton Park, who was responsible for a mild surprise in the decision of the Rakino Handicap at the Takapuna meeting last Monday, by leading the field home in that race, formed one of the collection of yearlings bought cheaply at' 100 guineas by Mr D. W. Alison, jun., at the Sydney sales last autumn. Hampton Park was purchased some time back by Mr A. E Watkins, and he gave his new owner an early return. Hampton Park carries a promising appearance and the, future should have something in store for him, comments “Phaeton.”

An Improving Stayer. Shrewd is a likely winner of distance handicaps this year, and it is not too much to say that ho has even an outside chance in the Auckland Cup, writes “Vedette.” He is a natural stayer, and invariably has been going very strongly at the finish of middledistance races. He ran a great race in the Feilding Cup, and owing to a slow beginning was compelled to race Tight round his field on the turn to the straight. But for this he would have made Rabbi’s task more difficult. It is not absolutely certain whether he will be kept for meetings in this part of the island at the end of the month, but the Auckland meeting is the more likely. The flattering handicap in the Auckland Cup has not favoured him, but for all that ho should give a good account of himself.

Statuary. The connections of the Leighton— Statuette three-year-old Statuary threw in for a good win when he K€8BC»1 at Feilding last Saturday. They tel/cd their calculations on his secoad to Fleeting Shower in Australia ratrier than on his Otaki form. Fleeting Shower, who has been very consistent this season in Sydney, recording a win, a second, three thirds, and a fourth in her only six starts, recently changed hands, and will in future compete on the A.R.C. tracks. Her success was in the Three-year-old Handicap, second division, at Menangle Park, when she beat the second horse, Statuary, by six lengths. Subsequently Fleeting Shower finished third to Zetheus and Portion in City Tattersall’s Novice Handicap, one mile, last month, and fourth to Eaton Blue, Dalston and Magnifier in the Three-yea’r-old Handicap at Randwick.

Lysander’s Half-Brother. Mr L. G Paul, who loves to have a couple of horses under his care, appears to have the makings of a good one in Arisus, the bay gelding by Thespian out of Pennon, dam of Lysander and Ceremony. In the Feilding Stakes last Saturday, when Paganelli went under to Cimabuc and Kaihoro, Arisus was never nearer than third and finally finished up fifth, just behind Princess Betty, but he was not knocked about when it was seen that he had no chance. The result was that on Monday, in the Oroua Nursery Handicap, Arisus very nearly brought off a surprise of a pronounced order. He was in the lead until a hundred yards from home, and it was only lack of racing condition that told against him in the final pinch. Had he succeeded he would have returned a dividend of just on half a century, most of which would have been handled by his immediate connections. Arisus will do to keep in mind.

Egmont Nominations. The change of dates of the Egmont Racing Club from February to the week before Christmas was something of an experiment and the officials of the club were rather anxious about the result. The nominations, therefore, were awaited with some anxiety, but they were more than reassuring. They represent an all-round increase on last year, and, moreover, class is just as good, or better. Quite a number of trainers are going to race at the meeting prior to going on to Auckland, while the local brigade have now a natural sequence of Hawera, New Plymouth, at Christmas, and Stratford at New Year, or Awapuni at Christinas and Marton at New Year. Just whether the racing public will turn out in good numbers to a mid-week fixture so close to the festive season remains to be seen. From simply a racing point of view the fixture and the change should be a great success. Great Charter. Great Charter was one of the absentees from the Feilding Jubilee Cup, but there was nothing wrong with the son of King John. Mr T.. H. Lowry was just disinclined to run him, but he will race next at Ellerslie. Shrewd’s Mission. Shrewd’s display in the Feilding Jubilee Cup last Saturday has led many to discuss his prospects during the holiday racing campaign. Some reports have it that the King Mank gelding will undergo a special preparation

for the Manawatu Cup, while it is also stated that he -will be ridden in the Auckland Cup by H. Wiggins. Those interested may be left in the dark until December ‘2O, when acceptances for the principal meetings fall due. Clever.

When Clever won the Fitzroy Hack Handicap at Feilding on Saturday she returned a good price, and as Mr John Donald invested sufficient on the filly to return her purchase money and something to spare, the Westmere studmaster must be well pleased over the deal. Clever, it is understood, will be taken to Ellerslie to contest the Great Northern Oaks next Easter, and it would not be surprising to find her earning other winning brackets before then. She will go to the stud nevt season, though if she develops good form on the course her stud duty may be postponed.

Appointments. Recent appointments made by racing clubs in the Auckland Province include the fallowing: Mr H. Shaw, starter to the Darga ville and Waipapakauri Clubs; Mr A. Hronson, judge to the Waipapakauri Club; and Mr R. H. Skipworth, starter to the Te Aroha and Rotorua Clubs.

Surprised Them All. It is only a few weeks since P. Corrigan made an appearance at Ellerslie with Kairuffi, and as it looked as if he had not accomplished sufficient work to fit him for Takapuna engagements, few of the track watchers were prepared to see him score such a striking wiu in the Highweight last Saturday. And the Surveyor gelding did it in really fine style, acquitting himself more like a veteran performer than one having his first race. But there it is, and the only regret is the fact that the connections of the horse did not have sufficient encouragement to help themselves to the handsome dividend —nearly a third of a century. Kairuri Las removed himself from the maiden class but as he is susceptible to a great deal of improvement, he will only require t 0 train on to secure additional wins in good company. Corinax.

Lauded to the skies just prior to the opening day of the Takapuna meeting, last year’s Auckland Cup winner, Cojinax, came in for strong backing in the Alison Cup, but he disappointed even his most sanguine admirers,, and was whipper-in —a repetition of his form iu this same event 12 months ago, when he ran in the rear throughout and subsequently won the Auckland Cup. Everybody apparently overlooked the son of Magpie on Monday, and aided by the poor start, his pilot, R. McTavish, was able to bounce him. out and allow him to make his own pace all the way. There was never any doubt as to what the result would be, and this fine stayer had matters all his own «».ce thev hit the straight. It was a brilliant effort and demonstrated Corinax to be near the top of his form for his Auckland Cup engagement.

Happy Results. Roral, one of the most successful two-year-olds in England this had * a rather romantic rise. Sold by his breeder, Lord Dewar, in October, for only 370 gns, his buyers, not fancying him too much, put him into the sale ring two months late, and got 700 gns for him. His present owner evidently had such moderate notions of Roral’s value as a racing proposition that he adopted the unusual course of putting him into the ring for the hunter’s class at the Royal Show, and won a premium with him. Roral evidently resented these indignities, and showed sq much pace in trials that it was decided to race him. This move had happy results, as he won three races, including the Gimcrack Stakes, and the Imperial Produce Stakes, of six furlongs. The Banker.

Having his first run since October 12 The Banker was not seriously regarded for the A.J.C. November Handicap in. the early stages of the betting, but towards the close of wagering

a solid commission w r as placed on his behalf. There was little in his public form to justify the confidence, his last start in the A.J.C. Waverley Handicap, of one and three-quarter miles, seeing him finish sixth to King Conrad, a horse that up to that stage was eligible for a Trial Stakes. In the race he could never better sixth position. On November 16, however, The Banker proved a very different horse, for, taking charge at barrier rise, he led the field over the full twelve furlongs. Nothing in the race appeared anxious to deprive him of the lead in the early stages, and, at the close, nothing was able to. His success was more a triumph for jockey Munro than a triumph for Mr Otway Falkiner’s veteran stayer.
