TAIHAPE FIRE BRIGADE AFFAIRS The monthly meeting of the Taihapc Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday evening when there were present Capt. J. Mortland (chair), Lieutenant Collings, Foreman Hartley, As sistant Foreman B. Flight, Firemen Mako, Ireland, O. Capill, Whiting, Marsh, H e McClure, Thomason, V. Flight, Messenger Murphy, ex-Cap-taiu S. F. Reid and the secretary (Mr W. H. Adair). A letter was received from the Unit, ed District Fire Brigades’ Association inquiring if the brigade was preptVea to hold the next district demonstration and conference at Taihape. The secretary expressed the opinion that the time was not opportune to hold such a demonstration at Taihape. It would mean an appeal to the public for financial assistance and as there was such a lot of canvassing going on lately he did not think it would be quite fair to appeal to the public for assistance especially in view of the fact that only a short time ago, the brigade had appealed to the public to support the annual fire brigade ball which was such an outstanding success. Captain Mortland: It is hard to canvass the town now. Times are Dot like they used to be. We would require about £lOO to conduct a demonstration at Taihape.

Secretary Adair: The U.F.B.A. might grant a;subsidy of £35. Even then we would have to find £65. We have just had our annual ball and I don’s think it would be quite fair to appeal to fhe public again. Lieut. Collings: If a demonstration were held at Taihape a great deal of money would be spen* in the town. The business people of Hokitika benefited considerably when the U.F.B.A. demonstration was held there last year. Each fireman who attended the demonstration spent about £5 per week, I was talking to one local business man and he thought it would be a good idea if a demonstration were held in Taihape. The Chamber of Commerce might assist us. The town will benefit more than we will. It would be a good idea if we approached some of the prominent business people and ascertain their views on the matter.

After further discussion Capt. Mortland, Lieut. Collings and secretary Adair were appointed to approach some of the leading citizens in the town including the president of the Taihape Chamber of .Commerce with the object of finding out how they regarded the proposal. The sub-commit-tee appointed for this purpose, was instructed to report at a special meeting of the brigade next Wednesday. The treasurer announced that the general fund was in credit to the extent of £l2 7s Id. Captain Mortland informed the meeting that the annual ball had resulted in a profit of £73 18s which was most satisfactory. He wished to take the opportunity of thanking everyone who had helped to make the function such a success, Ex-Captain 8. F. Reid congratulated the brigade on the success of the ball and added that the brigade could always count on him for assistance. (Applause).

Captain Mortland sadi that some members were failing to attend on practice night and he appealed to members to turn up in larger numbers in future. Lieut. Collings endorsed his superior officer’s remarks.

Captain Mortland announced that Mr U. Watson of Baetihi who was an exmember of the brigade had expressed a wish to entertain the brigade and ex-members at a social evening and wanted to know what date would be, suitable. It was resolved to thank Mr Watson for his kind offer and to inform him that December 12 would be the most suitable date.
