RUAPEHU AT COLON A cable message to the New Zealand Shipping Company reports that their liner Ruapehu arrived at Colon last Saturday, on route from London and Southampton to Suva, Wellington and other New Zealand ports. She is due at Wellington, on October 27. RECORD RUN HOME A new record for the passage from New Zealand to England via the ' 'anama Canal has been made by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s turbine liner Mataroa, which arrived at Southampton on Sunday morning. The Mataroa left Wellington at 7 a.m. on August 28, and after traversing the Panama Canal, called at Curacao for fueloil supplies. By making the run in a “shade” over 32 days, the Mataroa has cut fully 24 hours off the previous record which she established at the beginning of this year. On that occasion the Mataroa made the passage in 33 days 3 hours 12 minutes, her actual steaming time being 31 days 19 hours 40 minutes. The record for the outward passage from Southampton it at present held b ' her sister ship, the Tamaroa, which, leaving Southampton on March 28, arrived at Auckland on April 29, the elapsed time for the passage being 31 days 16 hours 52 minutes, and the actual steaming time 30 days 8 hours 38 minutes The Mataroa’B new record for the' Homeward passage is a remarkable one, 1 especially in view of the fact of her

having to deviate to Curacao, which adds to the steaming distance and involves a detention in port while taking in oil. Her actual steaming time must be very close to the Tamaroa’s outward record, and her average speed would be well over 15 knots. The Mataroa carried 235 bags of mails from Wellington, and this has been delivered in London only four days behind the Vancouver mail which left Auckland a day before the Mataroa sailed from Wellington. OIL CARGOES COMING The tanker Ranella arrived at Auckland on Tuesday from Tarakan with a cargo of fuel oil for Auckland and Wellington. She is due at Wellington on Saturday and is to leave here on Monday for Balik Papan. The tanker Spondilus is due at Wellington on October 20 from Singapore with a cargo of motor spirits for this port and Auckland. Inward bound from San Francisco, the tanker Plume has sent wireless advice that she expects to reach Auckland at daylight to-day. The vessel is under charter to the Vacuum Oil Company, and after putting out her Auckland consignment is to sail for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin to complete discharging.
