FEDERAL ELECTIONS

THE NOMINATIONS CLOSED SEVERAL INDEPENDENTS [ Australian Press Assn. ] SYDNEY, Oct. 1. Nominations for the Federal House of Representatives election closed today. There were many eleventh hour surprises. The whole of the six Afinisterial deserters—Afessrs Hughes, Marks, Afann, Maxwell, Stfiwart and Sir Littleton Groom have strong opponents. In the North Sydney contest, where Air Hughes and Dr. Nott are seeking the anti-Labour suffrages, two additional candidates have been nominated — namely, Air Judd, Leader of the Socialist Party, and Air Blanko, describing himself as an Independent Labourite. Neither of these candidates is expected to poll more than a handful of votes. The Prime Alinister has two opponents in the Flinders contest in Victoria—Air Holloway (official Labour) and Air Birch (unofficial Labour). The nominations are noteworthy for the number of Independents and unendorsed National and Labour candidates. This election, which is causing tremendous interest and personal feeling, has brought forward many more aspirants than were expected. MEMBERS ELECTED UNOPPOSED [ Australian Press Assn. ] SYDNEY, Oct. 2. The following were elected unopposed:— Country Party: Dr. Page, leader (New South Wales), Prowsc and Gregory (Western Australia). Labour Party: Scullin (leader), Alathews and Afaloney (Victoria), James and Watkins (New South Wales), Alaking (South Australia).
