THE TURF

FOR THE AUCKLAND MEETING YESTERDAY'S TRACK WORK BLLERSLIE AND AVONDALE [ Special “Chronicle" Service ] AUCKLAND, Oct. 1. Horses down to run at Ellerslie on Saturday and Monday next were not asked to go extra fast in their workouts at headquarters this morning, their tasks being such as to convey the impression that the real trials are being L reserved until Thursday morning. 1 It was a rather bleak morning at Ellerslie, a strong wind and heavy sky portending unpleasant weather conditions, but the rain, except for a few light showers, held off well. The outside of the course proper was thrown open, this furnishing excellent going with the pegs out about 50 feet. The course just now is in tip-top order and with not much rain between this and Saturday the turf will roll out well. King Emerald, on the outside, beat Gold Money and Eager Rose in their Spin ovjer five furlongs. They went fast over the first quarter, recording a slick 25 3-5, the time for the full journey being 1.5 3-5. King Emerald, despite being asked to cover most ground, was going very freely at the close and may get into the money at the meeting. Gold Money could have done bet; ter but all the same she did not appear to infuse that dash into her task that characterised her efforts when she struck a winning vein. A Smart Chief Ruler. Unshipping his rider while cantering round to gallop, tho two-year-old Chief Link did not come to any harm through his escapade, quickly submitting to capture. A little later he was sent round to run half a milo in company with Grand Spirit, the half-brother to Silvermine having a bit the worst of the weights. They were travelling at top when they passed the peg to set the watches going, cutting out the initial furlong in 12 2-5, and they came home the last three in a smart 38 2-5, returning 51 for the four furlongs. Chief Link, who had the inside running, was a shade in front at the post but he appeared to have a good deal in reserve. Undoubtedly he is a smart youngster.

Currajong pleased very much by the manner in which he accounted for Golden Wedding, Brampton and Salamander, who finished in that order, with the latter pair at good intervals. They cut out the first quarter in 26 3-5 and three furlongs in 39. Once in line for home Currajong finished resolutely to beat the hard-ridden Golden Wedding comfortably in 1.19 4-5. This was the best six furlongs. The Southerner, Pink Coat was given his first gallop at Ellerslie and he handled the reverse way of travelling in approved fashion. His task was one over six furlongs in which he had the speedy Silvermine to try him out. However, it was not an actual speed test for neither horse was asked to break the watches. The Southerner, a fine upstanding chestnut, took the outside running and- he was always going easily alongside Silvermine, the pair crossing the line on terms, the time for the six furlongs being 1.20, the first half of the journey taking 38 4-5 and the second half 41 1-5. Quite a lot could have been clipped off that time had the horses been asked for something special. It was just a good workout. Alloy’s Improvement. Alloy finished in front of Palmares and Bombarder (slow away) over five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. Alloy is now shaping up nicely and judging by the way he raced at Avondale recently ho is going to be a good proposition this season. He may be a good one to tick off for following. There were two interesting spins over a mile. This first was by the South Islanders Leader and Amor, who went very fast over the first portion of the journey, running the first two furlongs in 24 2-5, the halfmile in 51 4-5 and completing their task in 1.47 3-5, with Leader a length in front. The prospects of these two Southerners do not appear to be so bright as prior to the Avondale meeting. Ridden out, Singleton was going the better alongside Mountain Guide at the end of a mile, which, like the preceding trial, took place from the ne. barrier. They left the first quarter behind in 25. the four in 52, and under pressure they ran the last three in 41 4-5. the full mile taking 1.47. Work at Avondale. The outstanding gallop at Avondale was the brilliant six furlongs by the Guineas candidate False Scent, who defeated Crimestor in time that probably has not bjeen done on the new course. It was on the course proper that the trial took place, the trestles being 50ft. •ut from the rails. Crimestor has been going great guns »n the suburban track of late and that False Scent could defeat him by several lengths showed what vast improvec ment Mr A. B. Williams’ three-year-old has made. He cut the six furlongs out in 1.16 4-5, which was really wonderful time. This gallop will cause False Scent to enter into serious calculations for the Great Northern Guineas. Historic appeared to be holding Star “ Stranger safe at the end of a mile in 1.46 3-5 after the pair had cantered to that peg from the mile and a-quartfir post. Historic was on the outside and ne ig giving every evidence of being itill on the up-gradt. Maori Boy gave Appellant a start ind was up with him at the end of five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Cylinder moved particularly well when he came home in front of Knightlike at the end of half a mile in the brilliant time of 50 1-5. Cylinder is going to take a lot of beating in the Welcome Stakes on Saturday. His chance at Avondale was Extinguished at the barrier. War Officer, Good Idea and Restaurant were on terms over half a mile run in 53 1-5. Restaurant pulled up lame. Corinax was too good for The Lover over six furlongs in 1.21. Vallar did his best half-mile in 54 3-5. Bennie was in front of Lady’s Boy, with Mon Star several lengths back, at the end of a six furlong gallop in 1.20 3-5. Luxurious ran home from the six furlong post in 1.24 4-5. Roman Pearl sprinted four furlongs in 55. On No. 3 grass Taneriri completed a

circuit in 1.46, running the last six furlongs in 1.22. Lineage ran three furlongs in 39. Transformer- and Piuthair on the outside ran a mile in 1.50 3-5. Neither is a good track horse. Benzora and Te Atiawa covered half a mile down the back in 52 1-5. Valquette easily defeated Gold Lily by half a mile in 52 3-5. DECLINED ENGAGEMENTS PADDON AND GAY DUKE. [ Per Press Association ] AUCKLAND, Oct. 1. Paddon was scratched at 9 a.m. for the Mitchelson Cup, and Gay Duke for all engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting. The hurdler Clockwork returned from Australia by the Ulimaroa to-day. Roundelay has been scratched for the Great Northern Guineas.
