TAIHAPE MAJESTIC THEATRE Betty Balfour appears to-night in “Paradise’ l at the Majestic. The story is of Kitty Cranston, daughter of a poor East-End clergyman, helps the household exchequer by working as a milliner. She is tired of her surroundings and longs for the sunshine and to live a sunny, happy life. She is dismissed from her employment, but wins £5OO in a crossword puzzle competition, and her dreams become realities on the Riviera. The reality is not what she expected, however, and she passes through a lot of adventures before she is rescued by her doctor lover, and taken back to the drab surroundings and “sqawking babies” of her East End suburb, where she finds happiness and peace. COLTS CRICKET CLUB The annual meeting of the Colts’ Cricket Club was held on Monday evening, when Mr J. R. Corston occupied the chair. The chairman reveiwed the club’s activities during the 1928-29 season and added that prospects for the coming season were bright and there was every indication that the club would be able to “send out” a strong Thursday afternoon team. The balance sheet showed the club to be in credit to the extent of £2 5s 6d, and to have assets amounting to £lB 3s, and no liabilities. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Patron, Mr J. Quirk; president, Mr J. R. Corston; vice-presidents, Messrs E. P. Duncan, J. Eteveneaux, A. E. Patrick, D. Neagle, J. Chapman, A. W. Gardner, H. D. Bond, A. J. Johnston, J. J. Ryan and E. Loader. Management committee, Messrs J. R. Corston, J. Dripps, 8. McClure and E. Fleet. Secretary and trea.surer, Mr S. McClure. The following delegates were appointed to attend the annual meeting of the Taihape Cricket Association next Saturday evening: Messrs C. McClure, J. Dripps and J. Benson. The subscription was fixed at 10s 6d for seniors and 2s 6d for juniors. It was decided to hold practices on Monday and Wednesday evenings. It was also resolved to endeavour to arrange a match with the Ngaurukehu Cricket Club, at Ngaurukehu on October 28 provided that the ground improvements at Ngaurukehu have been completed. HUNTERVILLE PERSONAL Miss M. Aitchison, of Hastings, will arrive to-day on a visit to Strathmore Hospital. Mrs J. Ramsom and Miss Jean Ramson, of New Plymouth, are visiting Hunterville. Miss M. Graham left Hunterville to take up duty at Umumuru School on Monday. Miss E. L. Paterson arrived on Monday morning to take up duty as assistant at Hunterville School. At Marton Queen Carnival, among

those knighted was Mr G. B. Gregory. Mrs Aitchison, who has been visiting Strathmore Hospital, returned to her home in Hastings on Saturday. The engagement is announced of Kathleen Rose, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Thomas, Waituna West, to Hector George, third son of Mr W. Eames, of Livingstone, Hunterville. MUNICIPAL THEATRE The Municipal Theatre will fairly rock with laughter this evening when the hilarious comedy, “The Gate Crasher,” will be shown. That inimitable comedian Glenn Tryon heads the mirth-makers, with Patsy Ruth Miller, Roy Barnes, Beth Laemmic and the Universal Follies’ Girls in support. This is a splendid comedy picture and you will enjoy it. Next Saturday “Excess Baggage,” with William Haines, will be the star picture, supported by an excellent programme. GENERAL NEWS A movement is on foot to establish a golf club in Hunterville and a few enthusiasts are exploring in the hope of finding suitable links. Mr G. Clark has opened up the metal pit on the property of Mr J. Ross and the first load of metal has been delivered in Hunterville. Mr F. R. Ching is making good progress with the erection of shelves and racks for the library and public reading room and tlm room should be ready to receive the nooks and papers this week. On Monday Mrs P. Waitere, of Bata, had the misfortune to run a car over a bank while turning, at Rata. There were three in the car, but Mrs Waitere was the only one hurt. She was taken to Strathmore Hospital where she is suffering from shock and minor injuries. MANGAONOHO RIFLE CLUB
