PIRATES OF PENZANCE
SUCCESSFUL SECOND NIGHT The second night of the Pirates oF Penzance, produced at tho Opera House by tho Wanganui Amateur i Musical and Dramatic Society, drew a ’■’till house, and an enthusiastic onfo. 1 Groat trouble has been taken with the scenery and both pirato haunts and moonlit ruins are most picturesquely staged. Mr Harisdn f’ook, tho producer is to ho complimented on tho general effect of the opera, which was put on in a stylo very far from amateurish. ”Pour. O King, tho PiratA> Sherry” opens proceedings blithely enough. The chorus is Gilbert end Sullivan to its last merry note. The amateurs have gathered together a fine chorus and both Mr Frank Thomas, as tho Pirate King, and Afr N. L. Tyler, as bis Lieutenant, wore most successfully cast. Mr Hubert Carter could hardly he improved upon as Frofloric, in addition to tho charm of his tenor voice (perhaps host hoard in tho duet ”Stay, Ffederie, Stay”) gave the touch of quaint precision to tho part that, one can well, imagine, tho, authors meant. Mr Hnrison Cook made excellent work of his role as sergeant of police, and the perennial .favourite “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One’’ brought down tho house. Among tho ladies. Miss Julio Worry looked sweet, and sang to match her looks, as Matfel. daughter of tho Major General, who. ns played by Mr Jim Pawson, was one of the hits of the evening, and rightly so. Miss Worry’s opening song, “Poor Wandering One” was sung with fooling and charm, and tho doiuuro attraction of her part was well sustained. Miss Eileen Anderson, as Edith was gay and vivacious, with the additional advantage of delightful voice, and Miss Lee Swan and Mrs Earl Wills, were equally effective, Mrs Leo Campion, as Ruth, was splendid both in voice and in acting, and always earned her applause, Tho wholio production kept a level of good work and tho amintouTS deserve tho suc/?s which ha?’ ?o far attended them.
