MR. J. T. HOGAN’S MESSAGE

It has been said that: —“The standard of employment of the * British people depends upon the volume of foreign trading in all its various forms and on the eheap and efficient activities of British merchant shipping.” To-day this foreign trading is no longer almost exclusively British—the rise of other powerful nations challenges Britain’s maritime domain and their policy not only assails her trade by competition on the high seas but erects tariff walls on land that restrict hey exports and alm at crippling her freedom of trade. Happily, coincident with the rise of these nations is the rise of the British Empire. A commonwealth of nations producing almost everything that man requires and the answer to the challenges are restrictions of other powerful nations is found in the policy of “Trading Within the Empire.” Our people should whole-heartedly endorse and support this policy, for behind it is employment and well-being for all within the Empire. Last year we imported over £3,339,085 worth of motor cars, motor materials and spirit from the United States and only £609,023 worth from the United Kingdom. Our orders placed within the Empire would help to sweep away unemployment in the Mother Country and tremendously increase the purchasing power of her people and create a better market for our own exports. Loyalty to our Empire, patriotism to our country, and duty to our own people demand our earnest co-operation and fullest support for “Empire Week’’ now and “Trade Within the Empire” always. (Signed) J. T. HOGAN, M.P. for Rangitikei
