APPEAL BY THE MAYOR

yo the business people of Wanganui much credit is due for the splendid spirit which again this year has prompted them to display in the forefront of the world’s marketable goods, those of Empire manufacture and produced by British labour. And so I trust that “Empire Trade Week” and the slogan “Buy British-made Goods” will alike shape public opinion and consequently translate such opinion into practice. Oftimes w.e boast of the common tie of citizenship; of the freedom we enjoy as members of the great British Empire. That th,c Empire should continue prosperous and unfettered by the shackles of influence designed to hinder proper trade relations is the supreme decision which should characterise every business man in the conduct of his business affairs. The success of British industry is the vital concern both of business houses which offer these goods for sale, and of the buying public. British made goods invariably stand the test and like the old oak, endure. Therefore, I ask the citzens of this City, for all time I hope, and at least during “Empire Trade Week,” to display a very earnest interest in wnat me local tradespeople have prepared as an attraction, and illustrative of British industry and workmanship. I wish our citizens responsibe for leading the way back to a period of cheery optimism, every success in their commendable efforts, and trust the local townspeople will co-operate right heartily and thus evidence the spirit to which I have referred. Mutual goodwill and interdependence within the Empire must necessarily stabilise industry and commerce, remove the spectre of unemployment, and thereby ensure peace, contentment, and happiness, to all the peoples comprising the British Commonwealth of Nations.

(Signed) W. J. ROGERS, Mayor of Wanganui
