BISHOP AND DEAN

WAIKATO DIFFERENCES CONCERNING A LECTURE [ Per Press Association ] HAMILTON, Sept. 30. Arrangements made by Dean Barnett for Mr Edward Branscombe, leader of the Westminster Singers, to give an address on music and religion at the Cathedral last night were vetoed on Saturday by Bishop Chcrrington. Consequently the address was given in the parish hall after the Cathedral service. The Bishop to-day explained that he had not been consulted regarding the proposed lecture. Mr Branscombe was not a licensed preacher. Even if he were he required the Bishop’s permission to speak in any church in the diocese. The bishop said that he had indicated through the Diocesan secretary his desire to see the Dean on the matter. The Dean had refused. If the church’s rule was not strictly observed there was no telling where it might lead.
