HARRIERS

WANGANUI CLUB CLOSE OF SEASON The final run of the season of the Wanganui Harrier Club was held on Saturday afternoon from the residence of the vice-president, Mr C. White, of Aramoho, and was very well attended. The race a. as run over 21 miles of rough country. Getting away with a good start E. Johnston led the field over tho first paddock, with Moore, Cardo and Knowles closely following, and Edwards some distance back. Moore overtook the leader, and had gained a good sixty yards advantage at the completion of the first lap, which had taken slightly, over 15 minutes. As the field settled down to the second lap, Johnston, lengthening his stride, overtook Moore on the hill and running strongly won by about 200 yards, in the good time of 30 mins. 11 secs, with Knowles and Carde battling tho last quarter of a mile for third place. Knowles eventually gained the advantage by a yard. Edwards was a good fifth. The sealed handicap resulted in a popular win for G. Knowles, with Carde a very close second. Messrs C. White and E. Pleasants acted as judge and timekeeper respectively. At the conclusion of the run the club members were entertained to afternoon. tea by Mrs White. In the course of a short speech prior to presenting G. C. Knowles with the medal donated by Mr White for the sealed handicap, Mr G .Moore, the club captain said that although the attendance had not been so large this season as in previous years it was intended to make all efforts to enlarge the field next season, and an earlier start would be made. It was disappointing not to see more members of the football teafns and track runners joining the throng of the harriers, ns cross country running was without doubt the finest training for any class of sport. The death of Mr W. E. Bramwell had been a groat loss to the club and had no doubt accounted for many of the runners falling out. The times for Saturday’s run were
