MR WILLIAM HEUGHAN

A DELIGHTFUL CONCERT Despite the unfavourable weather conditions a large and most appreciative audience greeted the second concert given by Mr William Heughan and his company in the Opera House on Wednesday evening. The richness of tone and facile phrasing combined with pleasing histrionic effect made Mr Heughan popular with the audience from the outset. Drawing from a remarkably extensive repertoire he was able to present an entirely different programme from the previous evening with the exception of one or two items repeated by special request. The numbers were of varied nature, including operatic, airs, and songs of English, Ireland and Scotland. Miss Maud Bell delighted the audience with her sympathetic rendering of a number of ’cello items. Miss Gladys Sayer was heard to great advantage in a nocturne and a waltz by Chopin, while as accompanist for the other artists she was outstanding.

Mr Heughan informed the audience that he had managed to arrange for a farewell visit on October 21 and 22 before his final departure from New Zealand.
