ST. JOHN’S CLUB ANNUAL MEETING NEXT WEEK. RECENT ACTIVITIES. The committee of the St. John’., Tennis Club, at a recent meeting, decided to hold the annual meeting at the Rendezvous on Tuesday next, August 27, at 8 p.m., and it was also proposed that tho opening day for the new season be September 7. Working bees were arranged for both the asphalt and grass courts prior to the opening, of which there will bo 13 for play this season. It was mentioned that with the increased number of courts available, there would be bo vacancies for both ladies and gentlemen. Prospective members arc therefore cordially invited to the courts and should get into touch with the hon. secretary or any member of the committee.

The courts have been well patronised of late and there has been some stirring matches for the mixed doubles and men’s doubles silver buttons. Miss M. Purcell, the New Zealand school girl champion, is playing good sound tennis, her backhand shot being very deadly at times. Miss M. Myers, the Wanganui champion is playing consistent tennis. Her forehand shot and passinr shots are hard to beat. Marshall and .Lampe, the Wanganui champion pair continue to hold the silver buttons, )vhilst Miss Myers and H. Cox hold th< mixed silver buttons, and Miss Cox and .Mrs Smith hold the ladies’ silver buttons.
