RACING AT RICCARTON GRAND NATIONAL MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (By “Kestrel”) The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand. National meeting will be concluded at Riccarton to-dav, and latest reports indicate that fine weather may be expected for the conclusion of the fixture. The track is also in really fair order. .. Fields for to-day have kept up well as far as numbers are concerned, and there mar be some interesting racing. There is a big field in the Longbeach Handicap, in which Leader, Taranto and Boi de Vai appear likely to be xn the money. . In the Aylesbury Steeplechase Kai ka'nu and Birkbeek may carry the confidence of investors. , Aberfeldv, Locarno and Ecd Fuchsia appear a I’ikcly trio in the Sydenham Hurdles. Carinthia may have as good a chance as anything else in the Styx Hurdles, but Amorist and Gala Day will be close up. For the Lincoln Steeplechase King s Guard may make amends for his Grand National failure, with Wiltshire and Fabriano a dangerous pair. The Heathcote Handicap may see backers declaring for Taboo, Black Duke and Full Feather. The seven furlongs of the Bedcliffs Handicap may suit Narrative better than Honeycomb and Hounslow. The meeting will be concluded with the Selwyn Handicap, for which Gold Cure, Gay Sonnet and Bonogne may appeal to investors. The following are the fields for to-

After a summer-like day to-day and a very fine week of weather it is a good deal to expect a fine day to-mor-row for the conclusion of the Riccarton meeting, but present conditions are fair enough. The fields are again good. Backers are set a big task in the opening event. Taranto and Dutch Money are expected to run well but Blue Metal and Grand Song are likely improvers. Kaikahu and Birkbeck should fight their battles over again in the Aylesbury Steeplechase. National Hurdles for points to Lancer, Horomea and Locarno in the Sydenham Hurdles. Paris, if produced in the Styx Hurdles, is worth a passing thought. Antrim Boy and Amorist may be the next best. For all his weight Wiltshire appeals most in Lincoln Steeplechase. Matu may be the next best on form. The Heathcote Handicap is a tough jne. Black Mint, Black Duke, and Full Feather may be the best. Narrative is a likely one to extend Honeycomb in the Redcliffs Handicap, with Wrigley an improving customer. Gold Cure cannot be left out of the Selwyn Handicap calculations and Prickles and Tcheka may be the next best

N.Z. Horses Abroad. A cablegram from Sydney reads as follows: —There is a good deal of curiosity in Sydney concerning the invasion of New Zealand horses, fifty of which are already here lor the spring carnival. Prominent New Zealand trainers in the course of interviews, stated that the principal reason was the high cost of racing in the Dominion whereas Sydney was more centralised with courses all adjacent to the city, while riding fees were cheaper and there was always the prospect of selling a horse at a nice profit. The position was not so rosy in New Zealand, where it cost £4 more to take horses from Ellerslie to Trentham and back than for the return trip to Sydney.

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB SPRING FIXTURE OF 1929 EXCELLENT NOMINATIONS The optimism that was evident at the annual meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club last month w r ould appear to have been justified if one may judge by the nominations received for the spring meeting, which will be held on {September 12 and 14. Last night, when the nominations closed, it was evident that owners and trainers had responded well in the way of entries, and the fact that an in- [ crease of 35 was shown over the two days is very gratifying indeed. The committee may now feel confident that they have turned the corner of the long lane of adversity. It is very pleasing to find the Trial Handicap, th e new race placed on the programme in place of the Railway Hack of the second day, well patronis, ed, there being 52 entered, -which is the largest of any of the races. In most of the other races there have been steady increases, though the open sprints show a decrease. The following table shows how the nominations for 1929 compare with last year’s figures:—

MARTON JOCKEY CLUB the spring meeting SPLENDID NOMINATIONS Excellent nominations have been received by the Marton Jockey Club for the two days of their spring meeting, which, is set down to be held on September 4 and 5. Though there is a slight decrease in the aggregate of entires as compared, with the spring meeting for 1927, the last occasion on which a two-day spring fixture was held by the Marton Club, on the whole the quality is really good and the Club should find itself in a good position when the meeting concludes. PLEA FOR TOTALISATOR ENGLISH WRITER’S VIEWS. Ascot has left behind one regret in my mind, writes “ Tetrarch, ” in the London Sunday Graphic. The sport has been excellent, of course, the weather glorious, and I have finished on the right side in my weekly duel with my oookmaker. But there is still one regret —that is the absence of the tote. If any one meeting needs a tote more than another it is Ascot, and it is needed more than ever just now. The Royal meeting is a bookmakers’ harvest, and this year a bigger harvest than ever has come their way. Betting has never been on such a scale as it has been in th e past two months. Even the hectic days immediately after the war, when everybody seemed to have money to gamble with, have been eclipsed. So that the ring cannot complain of cramped markets, but the betting pub-

lie can still complain very much of cramped prices. Take a case in point—the race which Mr Jinks won on Tuesday. I saw some of the figures from the books of several big layers, and you can take it from me that if they had betted strictly to money, the price of Mr Jinks would have been more than twice as good as it was, ‘ ‘There are no real bookmakers left in Tattersail’s, but there arc a few in the Silver Ring still,” a friend of mine remarked to me, and he has had years of active experience among all grades. At Ascot we see the bookmakers at their worst. That is why I want the tote, which automatically gives the public a fair deal.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Kestrel”) The Grand National meeting at Rieearton will be concluded to-day. Wanganui Nominations. Judging by the nominations received lor the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting, the fixture will be well up to the standard of previous years. King’s Cup. New Zealanders will be interested in the result of the King’s Cup, which will be run to-day at the Queensland Turf Club’s Exhibition meeting Oratrix and Seatown will represent the Dominion, but it looks as if Valparaiso is going to be the tough one of the field. Bright Glow. Trainer J. Fryer, with Bright Glow and the Tonbridge youngster, arrived in Sydney on August 6 after a very good trip, on which the horses did well. A Good Double. M. MeCarten rode the last flat winner of the old racing season in Sydney (Bill Frisco at Hawkesbury) and the first flat winner of the new season (Killarney at Warwick Farm). End of Love Call. The three-year-oid gelding Love Call owned by Mr James Williamson, and trained by J. H. Wallace at Te Aroha, died on Wednesday morning from an internal ailment. Love Call, who was by Romeo—Lassie Thurnham, won the Tamahere Stakes at the Waikato Racing Club’s spring meeting last year and was viewed as a promising horse. Lord Banaid. Lord Ranald was still suffering from soreness on Wednesday and was withdrawn from his remaining engagements at the Riccarton meeting. The trouble is in the stifl e and is believed to be the result of the strenuous work he has done during the past few weeks. He is still under veterinary treatment, but it IS anticipated h e will soon be rid of the ailment. It is intended to treat nun to a lengthy spell later. Bumours Scotched.

tlle first race a t Biecarton on Ihursday, according to the special corespondent of the Auckland Sun, Mr v 1 J?, 1 secr «tary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, made the following statement to the Press:- , . rumour has been current in the last few days to the effect that the well-known steeplechaser, Glendowie, is alleged to be identical with the Australian jumper Clan Robert. However, 1 cabled Mr Kewney, secretary of the Australian Racing Club, and, that officer replied, stating that Clan Robert is at present being used as a station hack m Victoria. Mr H. Rothery owner of Glendowie, also wishes me to state that the horse has been operated on for respiratory trouble. There have also been disquieting rumours about Lord Ranald, but there is nothing in them. ’ ’ s Comnwndatiou.

A Palmerston North scribe states that Commendation continues to go through his daily tasks in a satisfactory manner. Unfortunately, the Limond gelding struck himself last week but the mishap has not interfered with his training operations and he was allowed to stride along over a round one morning this week prior to running home from the six-furlong post, the first furlong requiring 15 1-5, the first three 40, and the full journey a tick over 1.27. Commendation may be found making a reappearance at Wanganui although the turning course will hardly be to. his liking. A Great Success. Mr G. L. Stead knows all about Brayton (by Bardolph—Za Za) who has won fame as a stud matron. While ? , VlSit to s y dne y in the autumn of 1914 he bought Brayton (then a yearling filly) for 320gns Mr Stead relates that on his-return to New Zealand he was asked by a leading studmaster: ‘Why did you buy that Bardolph filly for? None of the family on the dam’s side produce winners.” Having formed the opinion that Brayton would suit Boniform, that mating was resolved on, and the Australian-bred mare was put to the stud at two-years-old. Bonnetter was the result, and she won something like £BOOO in stakes. In subsequent seasons Brayton threw Royal Box, Tarleton, Affirm, Judge’s Box and Historic, who have all proved good winners. Mr Stead mentions that he sold Affirm to Mr Eric Connolly for lOOOgns. and that h e advised Mr V. Riddiford to buy Historic, who led the field home in the Winter Cup at Riccarton last Tuesday.
