Insects Put Lights Out i insecls are often the cause of unj watched beacon lights on the New ' Zealand coast becoming out of order. When Canoe Rock Liglit, iu the llauraki Gulf, was extinguished recently it was discovered that a mason bee had entered the lantern, built, a home there and raised a large family. The light is automatic. Ji. is out during [the day, but is lighted in the evening by a small pilot light. One of the I young insects had crawled over the pilot- light and extinguished it. The light on the Sandspit beacon, at Pouui Island, was once extinguished by a swarm of flies which found their way into the lantern. The light on Mnro Tiri (Hen and Chickens) Islands was on one occasion visited by a very small insect which crawled into the feed pipe for the light and caused carbonisation, with the result, that the light failed. The lights on the beacons have to haw.? ventilation, but every opening is covered with very fine gause. In spite of the precautions taken some of the Insects, which swarm round the lights at night, find a wav of getting inside I the lantern or in the mechanism of the |beacon.
