WHAT BUSINESS INITIATIVE SECURED When Air Gibbons took office the abbatoirs were managed by the AVanganui Afcat Freezing Co., Ltd., and as that company was also in the retail business there was strong and frequent agitation for the building of a municipal abbatoir and plaiig and sites had been discussed. The cost would hav P been £25,000 to £30,000 and another possible expense was a stock bridge over the Wanganui River. When the Meat Freezing Company -was compelled to suspend business, most people thought the municipal abbatoirs must come. But the Alayor saw further than that and turned disaster to the city’s profit. By a triangular bargain he secured for th 0 city efficient abbatoirs managed by the butchers themselves and a profit, of £3OO a year to the city, efficient; nn<l profitable cool stores for the Harbour Board, and the sale of the plant for the Freezing Co., besides keeping in employment many of the old company’s employees. To secure this, Air Gibbon s incurred a personal liability of £40.000 for the benefit of tho city and without profit to himself. This past achievement prosagos what Hope Gibbons can do in tho future.
