MARTON JOCKEY CLUB

ONE-DAY WINTER MEETING NOMINATIONS DUE TO-NIGHT Much interest will be displayed in the next few weeks in the lists of nominations for the early winter race meetings, for on these will be based opinions as to whether it is going to be a good cross-country season or not Hence it is that, throughout the North Island, at any rate, those interested ?n racing will await the nominations for the Marton Jockey Club’s winter meeting, to be held on Muy 4. I.t was a bold move on the part of tie Marton Club to take the step of dropping a day fiom their spring meeting and using Hie permit to give them a I'Jsu-Guy fixture at the commencement of the winter campaign. The programme issued is an attractive one, and should bring a good response from owners and trainers over a wide area, for the club is a popular one and the meeting is conveniently situated at the beginning of a circuit formed by the Hawera, Wanganui and Auckland meetings.

With the cross-country campaign in view the Marton Steeplechase ranks as the most important event on the programme. This is an open race over a distance of about two and a-half miles, the stake being £3OO, the winner receiving £225. Then there will be an open hurdle race with a stake of £175, the distance being about a mile and a half. These are the only events over obstacles, but there are in addition live races on the flat. The Crofton Handicap carries a stake of £260, ami will be run over a distance of a mile and a quarter, while the other open event will be the Flying Handicap, a six-furlong race for a stake of £2OO. Three hack races complete a very attractive programme. Nominations for all events at the meeting will close with the secretary, Mr A. Way to-night at 9 o’clock Owners and trainers are given this final reminder.

AT MARTON TRACKS

preparing fob next month CROSS-COUNTRY WORK On the Marton tracks yesterday inorn- | ing, writes the special correspondent of the “Chronicle,” the advent of the steeplechase season was marked by a fine performance by Banjuke (L. Jarvis) and Mandate (C. Anderson) once round over the steeplechase country, both giving a groat display of jumping. It was Mandate’s first appearance over I big jumps and he gave a very promising display for a beginner. Alaric (L. Jarvis) and Nucleus (L. G. Movis) went once round over the hurdles, both jumping well. Kilbrook (E. Anderson) and Brigadier Bill (F. Corlett) were, restricted to solo rounds over the hurdles, the latter jumping in his usual bold style. Warlille (L. G. Morris) fenced proficiently once round over the hurdles. A number of others did useful work on the grass track, including Vast Acre, Red Lane, a Quin Abbey filly, Nasselle, Earl of Ashlea, and Spearform (Greyspear—Merriform).
