AT AVONDALE TO-DAY

AUTUMN MEETING OPENS PROSPECTS DISCUSSED By ‘‘Kestrel.’’ Fine Helds will contest the eight I events on the card tor the opening day,' to-dar. of the Avondale Jockey Club s | ■autumn meeting, and the event in par-1 titular that will attract a great deal oil attention is the All Aged Stakes, This is run under weight-forage conditions, with penalties and allowances, over a distance of six furlongs, and the held to-day will see the brilliant Auckland sprinter, Aussie, opposed by half a dozen juveniles, included in the scxti t being Supremacy, Gay Ballerina amt Eaglet. The outcome of the meeting will be awaited with keen interest. Reports from Auckland indicate that the fine course of the Avondale Club is in excellent condition and the track in first-class order, although a trifle or. the soft side, as are all Auckland tracks after rain. The fixture, which will be concluded on Wednesday next, will commence today at 11.30 'a.m. with the MAIDEN PLATE HANDICAP. (Of 175 sovs; seven furlongs).

'l'his is the largest field of the day and with, twenty engaged backers will probably await indications from “inspired”'sources, as they arc termed across | ihe Tasman. Auckland critics have I nothing but good to say of the well- j bred Len. anti perhaps the top-weight j mav b(> preferred to Archilecn and Arihana. tteven claim engagements in the AVONDALE HURDLES, iOf 225 sovs; l’a miles). Roman Abbey won nicely at Ellerslie on Monday ami has only 121 b. more to carry. Clockwork, the surprise winner of the Brighton Hurdles a week ago, must again be accounted dangerous. The pair are sure to dispute favouritism ami Roman Abbey may prevail. Early in the day is the big race, the FOLEY MEMORIAL HANDICAP, iOf s"<> sovs; l'i miles). Still, Aussie has to concede these brilliant youngster*. 24ib and upwards and will need ail his great pace, but it will be ’(‘membered that when ho won th.o Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie on Vow Year’s Day, beating Pagamdli ami other good ones, he carried 9.11 and ran six furlongs in 1.11, winning by two and a half lengths, [f he can sopeat that to-day he stands a chance of beating the best of the two-year-•dds. It j s hard to accept Supremacy’s form in the Champagne Stakes as correct. It. was not his best form and

I good judges aver that, he should not have been started. The race may have I done him good but was more likely to j have the reverse effect and Gay Bal--1 lerina may beat him again. I Sixteen are down to contest the I CHEVALIER HANDICAP. (Of 225 sovs; six furlongs).

Black Mai re is a consistent performer and so is Respirator, for which reason there may be more support for the pair than for Air King. The defection of Tea Time leases fifteen in the field for the RAILWAY HANDICAP. (Of 375 sovs; six furlongs).

Valiar’s brilliant gallops before the Easter Handicap and his fine win last Monday entitle him to the position at the head of the handicap. King Lu is due to show up one of these da.’s. while Awarere, as a stable-mate of the briiilant Aussie and a winner of the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, must command support. Lady Quex is a smart sort and good credentials are I held by Subdivision. Lady ’s Boy. Wiiaka King and Ghelone, but one come< back to Awarere. Valiar ami King Lu. The day’s racing will conclude with the TITIRANGT HANDICAP. | (Of 225 sovs; one mile).

Outside Stormy, according to the handicapper, they arc a very even lot. for 71b. is considered sufficient for the range of weights. This would point to I Stormy having the best chance hut he may find Ohinemuri and Glenstar tough propositions.

LATEST FROM THE COURSE

REVIEW OF THE CARD. f Special “Chronicle” Service ] AUCKLAND. April 5. Conditions at the time of telegraphing are perfect for the opening, tomorrow. of the autumn meeting of the Avondale Club. Th course is in excellent order and with splendid fields enIgaged the suburban dub looks like j having a really good fixture. I A start is to he made with the Maiden Handicap (11.30 a.m.), in which are several that have shown | form on the country circuit, notably Lon. Loving Cup, Archilecn .Katusclia ( who will be bracketed with Lady Eustace). Lord Hopetoun and Measurer. It is possible that Archilecn (R. McTavish) - nd Lon (Tinker) will command most support. There are only seven left in the Avondale Hurdles (12.15 p.m.) and on Ellerslie running it looks as if Roman Abbey (L. Dulicu) will he a better favourite than Komak (F. McGovern). The big handicap, the 'oley Al emorial (1.5 p.m.) bears a remarkably open {appearance and it is difficult even to forecast what . i” go out favourite, j Corinax (McTavish), Flying Juliet | (Reed), Branson (Goldfinch ), Royal [Doulton (Loosing), Hyde Park (Ryan). White Fang (Wiggins), and Desert (Glow (France) all have, friends, although the latter is not a certain stariter on account of soreness. Perhaps [the actual fancies will be White Fang land Corinax. j They aie not a particularly good lot ;in the Oakley Handicap (1.50 p.m.), * in which. like all races from this mile {barrier at Avondale, the barrier positions will mean something. Perhaps j Stf-m Vast (W. H. Jones), who went a 'good race at Ellerslie, will be prefer- • red to Star Comet (Brady), although |the latter should he suited by the long ’run home. 1 The biggest attraction of the day iwill be the meeting of Aussie and Gay [Ballerina in the All-Aged Stakes (2.35 Ip.m.), in whif.-i’ the likely starters, with it heir riders, are; Aussie (Tinker). Gay 'Ballerina (Reed), Eaglet (Goldfinch), iDiaJston (McTavish;, Polyxeaa (WigIgins) and Motere (Horne). There N little doubt that Aussie will start a hot odds-on favourite, but there is a hope that- the filly Gay Ballerina will be able to lower his colours, for she has shown such brilliant fin . king powers in her last couple of outings. It, is going ‘o be a . ieat race between them and even if one leans towards the, older horse it would occasion no surprise to sec Gay Ballerina give him the race of his life. There is little included in the lightweights in the Chevalier Handi p (3.20 p.m.) that seems likely to win and perhaps British King (McTavish) and Air King (France) will carry most

money. Bulolo would bo fancied, too, but he may require a race.

With a higher scale of weights compared with last Monday at Ellerslie, Valiar has been set a solid ask in the Railway Handicap (4.10 p.m.), for he is so well and speedy that even with 9.5 he may pull it off. King Lu, Awarcre, Lady Quex, Subdivision, r l e Begum and Lady’s Boy are some that may make it interesting, but backers may stick to Valiar (McTavish) and Lady Quex (Gouisbro). In the final event, the Titirangi Han dicap (5 o’clock), the draw at the post will be vital with such a big field remaining in, ami smart beginners will have a lot in their favour. Two such would appear to be Ohimniuri (Spinks) and Wenday (Brady), and perhaps they will carry more than the usual share of investments.
