HUNTERVILLE

On Christmas Day an old resident of the district passed away in the per. son of Air Timothy P. O’Leary, at the age of 78.

The late Air O’Leary was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to Naw Zealand in 1875. He was married in Wanganui 48 years ago, and had lived in Hunterville for c2 years, being engaged in farming pursuits for 30 years, prior to which he was engaged in road and railway construction.

A widow and grown-up family of nine are left, these being: Air B. J. O’Leary, Waimiha; Air D. A. O’Leary, Te Kuma; Airs T. Sheehy, Taumarunui; Airs A. Reed. Wanganui; Airs Greedy, Palmerston North; Airs Cox, Dannevirke; Airs Agnew, Hunterville; Airs Lord, Waitotara; and Airs G. Shindler, Hunterville. The funeral took place at Rangatira Cemetery on Thursday. SILVERHOPE SCHOOL The Silverhopc school picnic was held on the grounds of Air B. Illston. Alangold prizes were won as follows: Arthurene Illston 1, Marjery Bartlett 2, Gwen Illston and Frank Bartlett equal, 3. The following were the winners of the contests:—Young ladies’ race: Aliss P. Bartlett 1, Alisses Marjory and Leah Bartlett 2, Mcsdames Stewart and Ellery 3. Girls’ three-legged race: Gwen Bartlett and lona Voelkerling 1, Alarjery and Leah Bartlett 2, J. and L. Bartlett 3. Boys’ three-legged race: I. Gibbs and J. Illston 1, G. Gibbs and N. ‘on 2, E. Aferwood 3. Single men’s race: I. Lourie 1, C. Amer 2, W. Klatt 3. Young men’s race: E. Merwood 1, B. Knuth 2, L. Bartlett 3. High jump: C. Illston 1, L. Illston 2. Committeemen’s race: W. Volkerling 1, T. Hammond 2. The following puipls of Silverhopc School gained proficiency certificates:

PERSONAL Afr E. G. Simons, stationmaster, is on annual leave. Air Casey, of Taumarunui, is relieving stationmaster. At the Silverhope School picnic Mr and Mrs J. Stewart were presented with a coffee set as a mark of appreciation of parents and pupils. Air G. Shanley was successful at the December university examinations in passing in Banking part I. and Bills of Exchange law.
