“BONES” WINS FAME FOR "WENDY HUT”

Dear Wendy,—T am sorry that T haven’t written to you for such a long time, but I really have not had time, as I was very busy with those examinations I was telling you about. You asked me to let you know if I passed. Well, I did, so I am going to the Marton High School next year. Those who failed are sitting for the Proficiency examination to-day, while we others are having a holiday. I entered some drawings and also writing. I won 7s 6d and a points prize of a pai rof slippers. Also a first prize and championship for the writing. I haven’t told you where I won the prizes, so will tell you now. It was at the Marton Rose Show, anyway, I expect you saw my name in the “Chronicle.” I am entering some exhibits in the Marton A. and P. Show, too, and hope I will be successful. Did you get my story for the competition I must close now, with heaps of love.—From “BONES,” Marton. I am delighted to hear from you once more, my dear. I can imagine how busy you were with the examinations. It is always a busy time, and I do not mind being forgotten when my readers have so much to do in their study. I am very proud of you Fancy on top of passing you have acquitted yourself so well as a writer. How proud mother and father must be of you also. I hope you will be successful with your exhibits at the Marton A. and P. Show 4 Let me know if you win any more prizes, won’t you? I received your story.—Wendy. Dear Wendy.—Although only a week has elapsed since I last wrote to you it is really time to write again, isn’t it? I have declared that time flies even faster than the “Southern Cross.” It seems so, anyway, for we have really climbed the ladder of 1928, and soon 1929 will be before us, and it so i eminds me of this verse—- “ Strength for to-day is all that we need. For there never will be a to-morrow, For to-morrow will prove but another day. With its measures of joy and sorrow.” They seem to be true words, don’t they Wendy? I suppose, when your “Relief Ship” drops anchor at her destination it will be more than welcomed by many little children whose hearts will he made glad by the sights of such joyous Christmas fare. I think Mrs E. A. Dexter’s letters are very interesting, don’t you? My little (second) cousins ‘“Yellow Buttercup” and her sister, both write to you. “Paulette” and “The Tassie Kid” are distant relatives of mine, too. I received two more birthday presents the other day, one being from “Evening Star.” I think the Weather Clerk’s nerves are out of joint lately, as the weather seems so unsettled. I am enclosing some poetry for the “Poets’ Corner," and I hope it will be of some use. Well, a v news is scarce I must close. Yours till the world comes to an end.—From "LAUGHING LILAC,” Taihape. A beautiful little verse, my dear, and one very true of life. Yes, I can already see the happy smiles our gifts will bring to the faces of the poor children. How joyous they will be to awake on Christmas morning to find that dear old Father Christmas has not passed them by. Goodncsi me! I have a lot of queer relations in the Hut, haven’t I. Oh, by the way, “Sea Sprite” tells me that “The League of Merry Mr.tes” has disbanded. I am very sorry to hear this, for I know how happy you all were as members of it. I am pleased you have received more birthday presents. The weather during the week has been fairly well behaved here. Thanks for the poem. I will see if I can get any coupons for you. I would like to answer your question, bat 1 am not abe ’o.•-Wendy. ,
