In Town and Out

Christmas charities will be supported by the ’anganui Rotary Club to the following extent: Three pounds for the purchase of gifts for the inmates of the Receiving Home at St. John’s Hill, £3 for children in the hospital, £2 for the Y.M.C.A. camp and £2 for the Swankcrs’ Club.

Champion Athletes. Included in the Taranaki cricket team which is at present playing Wanganui on Cook’s Gardens, to decide who is to oppose Manawatu for the Hawke Cap, are S. Lay, who represented the Dominion as javelin thrower at the Olympic Games, and H. W. Brown, the All Black centre three-quarter, who toured England in 1924.

A Cargo of Salt. The steamer Kai ran ga, which berthed at the Castlecliff Wharf on Thursday from Melbourne via Wellington is on her third visit to Wanganui. The vessel, which has a nett tonnage of 1726, and is under the command of Captain Bruce, is to sail for Lyttelton on completion of discharge of her cargo, which includes 650 tons of salt.

Rotary Club Activities. The Wanganui Rotary Club will go into recess from Tuesday, D comber 18 to January 29. The wives of the members will be present at tl|e final luncheon of the year. At the luncheon next week the speaker will be Rotarian C. T. Salmon, secretary of the Palmerston North Rotary Club, who was an official delegate from New Zealand to the recent Pan-Pacific Rotary Conference. The subject of Mr Salmon’s address will be “The Outlook of Japan, Nationally and Politically.”

“Father Christmas” Arrives. Signs that Christmas is near arc not wanting. To the noise of traffic in the city streets, there has now been added the din of hooters and whistles, and there was a crowd of women and children waiting outside a Victoria Avenue store yesterday afternoon, to see “Father Christmas” arrive. When he alighted from his car he was besieged by a host of youthful admirers, struggling to get a glimpse of Santa Claus, whose popularity shows that he is still very real to the children. A Happy Thought.

A happy thought struck Messrs Emmett Brothers, Wanganui agents for a firm of gramophone makers, v'hcn they decided to take a gramophone out to the Health Camp at Turakina for the purpose of giving the children an entertainment. The little ones were delighted with the programme provided, a lact that was evident from the hearty cheers which they gave at the conclusion of the final item. One record that took their fancy was “Constantinople” and when it was finished there was u general cry of “Put it on again, please Mr Emmett.” Oarsmen ‘‘At Home.” The happy relations that are b:ought about by sports association arc never more exemplified than when at a social gathering, members of a sports club gather with their womenfolk to exchange views and news. At the Union Boat Club’s shed this afternoon the wearers of the light blue jerseys will put on what promises to be an attractive programme on the occasion of the “At Home” tendered by the president of the club, Mr J. R. Foster. Sculling and rowing races and swimming events, in addition to a greasy boom competition should provide entertainment for a large number of supporters of the club.

Surf Activity. Much activity has been evident ot late in connection with the affairs of the surf section of the Wanganui Head Centre of the Royal Life-saving Society, for their arc in view sceveral competition;. that will engage the attention of members. The team is now in hard training and members show great keenness and are anxious to obtain their surf intuallions. Team work will be necessary to enable members to have a chance in the contest, next January, for the Nelson Shield, while another trophy that members have in view is the William Henry Memorial Shield, which is a memorial to the founder of the Society, who died a tew months ago.

Wine in the Lounge. An innovation which savours of the Continental, has been introduced to Wanganui by the management of Foster’s Hotel This enables tho>se desirous of obtaining light wines, to visit the hotel’s luxuiious lounge for their requirements. The advantage is that the necessity of entering a public bar for such refreshment is avoided. The innovation is the more interesting on account of a recent statement made by Archbishop Averill, when he said that now the people of the Dominion had voiced thei; opinion more definitely against prohibition, it behoved the advocates of temperance to encourage the use of light wines as a beverage, in .preference to spirituous liquors. *
