MARTON

PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS (Special “Chronicle” Service.) The proficiency examinations for the schools in this district was held in Alarton on Alonday and results so far to hand show that the successes have been well up to the usual standard. THE PICTURES. Brilliant, glamorous, pictorial, scintillant with romantic charm, vibrant with dramatic tensity, dynamic- in its emotional moments, poignant in its bitter tragedy—that is “Ramona,” the United Artists photo-play, to be screened at the Alarton Town Hall to-night. “Ramona” is a screen triumph. Its continuity, direction, acting, photography and scenic vestment stamp it as one of the finest, most artistic pictures over produced. It is the second offering of that brilliant trio Edwin Carcwe, the director, Dolores del Rio, the star, and Finis Foy, the scenarist. Their first was “Resurrection,” the sensational film product of 1927. This classic love story by Helen Hunt Jackson has been masterly directed by Edwin Carcwe. The noted director has caught the romantic spirit of early California in the colourful days of the Spanish Dons, and he has faithfully brought to life >»n the screen the beloved characters of the book. The screen adaptation,* written by Finis Fox, is a splendid example of modern screen technique. His continuity is vivid and facile, and moves with direct, impelling force. Dolores del Rio as “Ramona” is superb. She invests her role with sincerity, deep understanding, poignant feeling and artistic conception. GENERAL NEWS. Mr W. Price, auctioneer, advertises that on Saturday next, at 2 p.m., he will sell by public auction at hig Marton mart, £lOOO worth of ngutrodyne receivers.
